ARCATA — A toe-to-toe effort with the nation's No. 11 ranked
NCAA Division II team proved unfullfilling for Humboldt State in a 34-14 loss to Central Washington on Saturday .
Humboldt State's defense kept the Wildcats under moderate control, but was impaired by three turnovers and other offensive mistakes that dropped the Jacks to 2-6 overall and kept them winless at 0-5 in the
Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Central Washington again rode the arm of All-American quarterback
Mike Reilly, who completed 20 of 29 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns. The Wildcats improved to 7-1 overall and 6-0 in the GNAC.
"The effort was there, as it has been all year," HSU head coach
Rob Smith said. "Guys were making plays, especially on defense. They played outstanding as a unit."
Humboldt State's defense forced the Wildcats to the air, stuffing the CWU running game for only 64 yards. But the Wildcats were quick to take advantage when HSU starting quarterback
Mike Proulx threw inteceptions on HSU's first two possessions, helping CWU gain a 14-0 after the first quarter.
The Lumberjacks struck back early in the second quarter when running back
Bobby Thomas passed 14 yards to
Devin Stearns for a touchdown, finishing off a 13-play, 60-yard drive the included two fourth down conversions. But Central countered with
Jerome Williams' 49-yard kickoff return that set up a Reilly to Jamal Weems 7-yard scoring pass near the end of the half.
Linebacker
Michael Lynch, who finished with 16 tackles and two sacks, led a strong second-half effort by the Jacks defense. Central still managed two Garrett Rolsma field goals, from 39 and 28 yards, and a one-yard touchdown plunge by Reilly after the break.
Garrett Hubrich took over for the Jacks at quarterback early in the first quarter, his first appearance at signal-caller since the season-opener. The senior finished 26-of-35 passing for 162 yards and one touchdown, a late 19-yard connection with tight end
Matt Devlin, who had five catches for 74 yards.
"(Devlin) had an outstanding game tonight," Smith said. "We need to get him the ball more often."
Humboldt State is back on the road for another GNAC game this week, taking on Western Washington at 1 p.m. Saturday in Bellingham.
