BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Exploding for 28 points in the second quarter, Western Washington put away Humboldt State early on the way to a 56-20 Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory Saturday.
The Vikings rolled up 492 yards off offense on senior day, with big contributions from wide receiver Pat McCann, who made seven catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Adam Perry, who completed 22 of 29 passes for 319 yards and a school-record tying five touchdowns.
With the win, Western Washington improved its overall record to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in GNAC games. Humboldt State dropped to 2-7 and remained winless in league at 0-6.
Humboldt State did manage 406 yards of offense itself, with seniors
Garrett Hubrich and
Brian Hildebrand sharing time at quarterback. Hubrich completed 16 of 27 passes for 211 yards, and Hildebrand finished 2-of-6 for 33 yards.
Geoff Davis made his first appearance for the Jacks, completing 1-of-2 passes.
"It's tough times for the Jacks right now, but I'm very proud of them," HSU head coach
Rob Smith said. "Our team keeps battling. We just got beat by a better football team."
Perry staked Western to a 14-3 lead just over 10 minutes into the game, going 8-for-8 for 115 yards passing in the first two possessions. Perry connected with McCann from 36 yards for the opening score, then Randall Eldridge ran in from five yards to cap an 8-play, 80-yard drive.
HSU's first two scores came via the field goal, Kyle Shierholt connecting on a 23-yarder and a 37-yarder in the opening half. The Jacks pulled within eight, 21-13, after their only touchdown of the first half, a 2-yard run by
Corey Stollmeyer with 11:14 leftf, but a 61-yard kickoff return by Rick Copsey put Western on the 28, and on the next play, Perry connected with McCann on an out-and-up pattern for a touchdown.
Western then put the game completely out of reach with two touchdowns late in the second quarter as Eldridge scored on a 2-yard run, and Perry threw a 12-yard pass to McKee with 23 seconds left in the half to give the Vikings a 42-13 lead at halftime.
"We've got two more weeks to play, and we have to rally," Smith said.
Humboldt State plays on the road again Saturday, traveling to Monmouth, Ore. to face Western Oregon.
