Lumberjacks Notes: Following the Lumberjacks first weekend of season play, the HSU coaching staff has had a chance to evaluate its progress. “We played well Saturday,” said Humboldt State head women's basketball coach Joddie Gleason. “Sunday, however, our shooting percentage was down midway through the first half, but we did a good job of rallying back to tie the game at halftime. Overall I don't think we made the smartest decisions down the stretch. We need to work on cutting down on unnecessary fouls.” … Even though the Jacks suffered a tough loss to the University of Mary, Gleason still thought her team was pretty tough. “I am very happy with our post against Mary,” said Gleason. “I think they did a great job, especially because we didn't know a lot about this team going into the game.” … Katie Franci led the team with 32 points, nine assists and six steals, and 13 rebounds to earn a spot on the NDNU Tip-Off Classic All-Tournament team. Franci had an impressive 21 points in Saturday's win in only 17 minutes on the court. …Taylor Kilgore finished the weekend second on the team with 24 points. Paige Peterson and Sallye Alexander contributed 22 and 20 points, respectively. … As a team, HSU limited its opponents to 65 points a game while averaging 80.

Opponent's Notes: Saint Martin's finished it's season-opening weekend undefeated with a 75-61 win over Lewis and Clark State and a 85-71 victory against Cascade College. The Saints' Dara Zack is averaging a double-double with 19.5 points and 13 rebounds per game, while Krissy Bassett and Roni Jo Mielke also average in double figures in points with 16 and 13, respectively. … The Jacks look for revenge against the Saints for last year's early season loss that prevented the Jacks from reaching the West Region tournament. “Last year Saint Martin's kept us out of the regional tournament with a last second win,” Gleason said. “They were ranked No. 8 at the end of the year and we were just behind them at No. 9.” … Western Oregon suffered the same fate as the Jacks, going 1-1 at the NDNU Tip-Off Classic. The Wolves fell 77-64 to Cal Poly Pomona Saturday, but came back strong Sunday to defeat Cal State Monterey Bay, 71-57. … Katie Torland finished the weekend averaging 21 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, while Sara Zahler followed closely behind with 11 points and 7 rebounds per game. “Torland is an undersize post but she can run, shoot outside and is very crafty,” Gleason said.

Head-to-Head: The Lumberjacks fall behind in the all-time series record against the Saint's with a 7-14 record. HSU fell 63-65 to Saint Martin's in its previous meeting last season. … Western Oregon leads HSU with a 16-9 all-times series record. The Jacks split last season's play against the Wolves taking an 106-79 win to open the Jacks' season, but fell 80-82 two games later.

Gleason's Comments: “(Saint Martin's) is well coached. They play an inside game. They contend and put up good numbers.”… “Western Oregon is a good matchup for us. They run the ball and shoot well. They force you to defend. Their style of play is a similar scheme to ours.”
