ARCATA – Playing all but 10 minutes a man down, Humboldt State dropped its season finale, 2-0 to Cal State Stanislaus in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer action
Sunday.
With the loss, the Jacks finished their season 8-8-4 overall and 3-8-3 in CCAA play while the Warriors ended at 4-12-1 overall and 3-11 in the CCAA.
“You can't expect a whole lot playing with only 10 men for 80 minutes,” Humboldt State head men's soccer coach Andy Cumbo said. “It not only changed our tactics defensively, but also on the offensive side of the ball.”
The game got off to a slow start, but when freshman midfielder
Lyle Menk got two yellow cards in the span of two minutes, HSU was left to play the rest of the game with only 10 players.
Despite being down a man, HSU still managed to get chances to score, outshooting the Warriors 5-4 in the first half.
Cal State Stanislaus struck just four minutes before the half when Bladimir Murillo hit a one-timer off of a cross by Jose Velasquez.
Both teams had their chances in the second half, with HSU outshooting CSUS 9-5 in the period and 14-9 for the game. Stanislaus was the only team to break through, however, when Velasquez knuckled a shot past Humboldt goalkeeper
Drew Ryan.
“We were just lacking the final touch
today,” said Cumbo. “Our counter attacks were effective but we couldn't make anything of them.”
Playing in his final collegiate game, Ryan finished the game with two saves, both of them keeping the Jacks in the game.
“Once again, like he has all season, Drew kept us in the game with some great saves,” said Cumbo.
