ARCATA – Dexter Hill's pass to Kyser Christensen with one second left in the game lifted Dixie State to a 19-15 win over Humboldt State in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference season finale.
With the loss, Humboldt State finishes the season 2-9 overall and 0-8 in GNAC play while Dixie State finishes its year 4-7 overall and 2-6 in the GNAC, both league wins coming against the Jacks.
“This could've been a great win,” HSU head coach
Rob Smith said. “This kind of loss hurts tremendously and our guys deserved a lot better because they really battled their tails off.”
The Rebels scored the only touchdown of the first half when Hill completed a 16 yard pass to running back Aaron Davies with 5:51 left on the clock. It was a half dominated by the Rebels, outgaining the Jacks 222 yards to 91.
With a lack of offensive production, Smith went to senior quarterback
Brian Hildebrand to spark the offense.
“We just had no rhythm in the first half at all,” Smith said. “(Starting quarterback) Garrett (Hubrich) was just thinking a little too much out there and we had to do something to change things up.”
Hildebrand did indeed get the offense going, answering a Dixie State 22-yard field goal with a 28-yard pass to
Devin Stearns halfway through the third. On the night, Hildebrand finished 13-25 for 164 yards.
“He did a good job moving the offense, which is something we had trouble doing all year,” Smith said.
After Dixie got another field goal midway through the fourth, Hildebrand drove the Jacks down the field on a eight-play, 50 yard drive. He capped it off with a 10-yard touchdown pass, his second of the night, to
Matt Smith with just 2:05 left on the clock.
With Dixie attempting the comeback, it appeared that cornerback
Justin Price had intercepted a Hill pass that would have ended the game. However, the call was over turned.
“You had one official saying it was intercepted, one saying he didn't,” Smith said. “In that case you just hope they got it right.”
Following the call Dixie marched right down the field, capping of its 13 play, 68-yard drive with Hill's pass to Christensen.
“This is the way it has gone for us all season long,” Smith said. “Learning how to win is just something this team will have to learn to do.”
