LA JOLLA – The Humboldt State men's soccer team more than doubled the shot output of the UC San Diego Tritons but could not cash in on their opportunities and lost 2-1 on Sunday. The loss drops the Jacks record to 2-8-2 overall, 1-6-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action. UCSD improves to 5-4-3, 2-3-3 in conference.
Despite outshooting the Tritons 17-8 on the day, the Jacks gave up an early goal and never recovered.
Just two minutes into the match and on their first shot, UCSD David Bakal headed a ball into the left side of the net to give the Tritons a 1-0 lead. The goal, Bakal's first, was from six yards out and came off the corner kick of Jonathan Sawyer.
After the Tritons got another opportunity in the ninth minute, the Jacks took the next six shots. The first two were off the foot of
Josh Suggs, both wide right. Lloyd Sinclair and
Scott Mariani each took shots that Triton keeper Peter Akman turned away.
In the 38th minute and on their third shot of the half, Kian Malek, from the center of the box, lifted a shot over Jacks keeper
Kyle Verle to increase the UCSD lead to 2-0. The sides went to the half with the Jacks out shooting the Tritons 6-4, but trailing by two goals.
When the two teams opened the second half sophomore
David Zwick was inserted in goal for HSU.
Zwick faced two shots that went wide before, at the 63:03 mark,
Josh Suggs broke in one-on-one and as Akman came out to cut off the angle, Suggs flicked the ball ahead and into the open net to cut the Tritons' lead in half 2-1. It was Suggs team leading fifth goal of the season.
The Jacks continued to shoot, taking seven of the next nine shots over a 20 minute span, but could not get the equalizer.
The final minute of the match saw the ball bouncing around the top of the UCSD 18. Freshman
Peter Darquea got a shot off, but it never made it to the goal, being blocked by the defense. Time ran out and the Lumberjacks came up on the short end of a 2-1 decision.
Suggs led the HSU attack with seven shots, two on net and one goal. Sinclair added three shots one of which reached the keeper. Verle gave up two goals, made no saves and took the loss. His record is now 2-8-2.
The Lumberjacks return to action next week in Redwood Bowl. On Friday they host Cal State Los Angeles at 4:30 p.m. On Sunday Cal State Dominguez Hills will be in town for a 11:30 a.m. kickoff
