Bobic’s double-double leads Jacks over Sonoma State 77-59

Andrea Bobic had a double-double against Sonoma State.
ARCATA – Three Lumberjacks scored in double figures, led by Andrea Bobic's double-double, as the Humboldt State women's basketball team swept the season series with Sonoma State 77-59 Tuesday night in Lumberjack Arena.

The win improves the record of HSU, the California Collegiate Athletic Association's first-place team, to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the CCAA.  Sonoma State falls to 4-2, 2-2 in conference play.

Box Score

Bobic had 15 points, a career-high 12 rebounds and four steals in 34 minutes of work.  Bree Halsey and Brittney Taylor each had 22 points.

“Their shots were going off the rim long, so I made sure I boxed out and just went after it,” Bobic said. “I ran a few down and tipped a few out of their (Sonoma State's) hands.”

The Seawolves took a 16-9 lead in the first four minutes, 55 seconds.  But a quick 8-0 spurt by the Jacks over the next two minutes, which included a three-point play from Bree Halsey, put HSU into the lead 17-16.

SSU briefly went ahead 23-22 with 5:33 left in the first, but it would be the last lead they would enjoy on the night.  Brittney Taylor, who equaled her season-high with 22 points, put HSU ahead 27-25 with a layup with 4:13 remaining.

The Lumberjacks finished the half on a 12-6 run and took a 39-31 lead into the locker room.  HSU forced 15 turnovers and scored 15 points off them in the half.

“Our defense helped dictate what we could get on the offensive end and allowed us to push the ball a bit,” head coach Joddie Gleason said. “They ran with us tonight, which is something they typically don't do.  They usually want to slow the pace.   We rebounded and got out on the break, got some transition buckets and open shots on the perimeter.”

The HSU offense in the second half was led by Halsey.  She scored 15 of her career-high 22 points in the second half on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

“I looked to Bree when they doubled me,” Taylor said.  “We work on it in practice a lot.  When her player came at me, she dove (to the hoop) and we connected.  That was a big thing for (Katie) Franci and I last year and now it has been passed on to Bree.  She is definitely a finisher.”

“I was diving and calling for the ball as soon as they went to Brittney,” Halsey added.  “It is an easier pass if I go right away.  If I stay at the top and just wait for the ball it is a lot more difficult pass for Brittney.”

With 16:47 left in the game, HSU pushed the lead to double-digits, 45-35.  They maintained that lead and ended up winning 77-59.  The Jacks made 15-of 21 free throws, 71 percent, and shot 50 percent (11-for-22) from the floor while holding the Seawolves to just 29 percent from the field in the second half.

Kayla Williams, making her second start of the season, played the point and dished out six assist, made two steals and scored seven points in 39 minutes of action.

“I contribute this win to Kayla,” Taylor said. “She controlled our offense and set the tempo for the entire team.”

“Kayla has played a lot of minutes for us at the one and the two this year,” Gleason added.  “She did a great job for us tonight.  She got our offense going and really elevated her game.

“As a team, tonight was the first game where we played two complete halves. Even in the games that we've won, we had one half were we played great and one where we were just average.  We were pretty happy with both halves tonight.”

The Jacks return to action on Friday and Saturday as hosts of the Humboldt State Classic.  Notre Dame de Namur, Northwest Nazarene and Cal State Stanislaus will participate.  HSU takes on Notre Dame de Namur at 7:30 on Friday before closing the tournament at 5:30 on Saturday against Northwest Nazarene.
