UCSD next opponent for Lumberjacks

ARCATA – Following another weather-induced postponement of competition against Chico State, the Humboldt State softball team's only action this week will be when it travels south to La Jolla to face UC San Diego on Friday and Saturday. Friday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. and Saturday's first pitch is at 11 a.m.

Weather Report: Friday's weather report for La Jolla is 67 degrees and mostly cloudy and then 70 degrees and sunny on Saturday.

Lumberjacks Notes: The Lumberjacks split the four games of their California Collegiate Athletic Association and home opener with Sonoma State and now hold an overall 6-2 record. …Heading into last weekend's game the Jacks felt confident with their pitching staff, but the four-game series against the Seawolves showed what might be the team's Achilles heel. Gracie Perez dropped game one and was pulled out during the first inning of game three. “Perez is only at 80, maybe 85 percent,” HSU head coach Frank Cheek said. “She showed a lot of heart this past weekend versus a good hitting team. Once she's healthy her pitches will be there.” …Freshman Nichole Parada, who came in relief in game three, picked up her first collegiate win in the Jacks' come-from-behind 6-5 win. “I'm really happy with Parada,” Cheek said. “She came here ready to play. She had trouble in the fall against Division I teams and was demoted to second team, but proved she was capable this weekend. She will be playing a more dominant role. She's a hard worker and gives us another dimension.” …Jenna Anderson went 1-1 on the weekend, taking the victory in game two's 10-0 mercy rule win before suffering the loss in game four's 6-2 decision. “Anderson, who is a sophomore, just doesn't have the tenacity that a veteran has,” Cheek said. “With more experience she will become tenacious and will be able to handle adversity.” …Felicia Viveiros registered her first collegiate home run in game three. …On the weekend, Natalie Galletly led the team with a .462 batting average (6-for-13), while Marissa Slattery registered three doubles with a .357 BA (5-for-14). Francesca West (.455 BA) and Lindsay Warren (.364) both added two doubles and Chrissy Motzny recorded a double.

Opponents' Notes: UCSD enters this weekend's competition with a 9-5 overall mark and is 3-1 in league. Last weekend the Tritons split a two-games series with Grand Canyon on Saturday and another with Hawaii-Hilo the following day. …UCSD has three players batting .300 or better in Kristyn Lesovsky (.545), Jenni Habib (.342) and Lauren Chastain (.300). Chastain, who doubles as a designated hitter and pitcher, leads the team with a 3-1 record and holds a 2.08 earned run average. Chastain's lone loss came in a 4-2 decision to Grand Canyon at the Best of the West Invitational. …Christine Zankich holds a 2-3 record with a 3.80 ERA. Camille Gaito (0.00 ERA) and Tess Granath (5.25 ERA) both possess a 1-0 record, while Brittany Sheats (5.79 ERA) posts a 1-1 mark.

Head-to-Head: HSU leads UCSD 16-4 in the all-times series mark. Last year the Jacks won five of their six games against the Tritons, recording their lone loss by a 5-2 score on February 1.

Cheek's Thoughts: “UCSD is a good team,” Cheek said. “UCSD's lead-off hitter is pretty tough. They play well at home and have a solid ball club. These will be four good games.” … “Viveiros is doing well,” Cheek said. “She lacks savvy for a No. 2 hitter and her base running needs some improvement, but it's early and she will improve. Klug and Motzny are hitting below their average so for now I'll move them down.” … “I'm not going to take anything away from Sonoma State, they played a good game,” Cheek said. … “We are hitting great as a team,” Cheek said. “We took a two-week break and that both hurt and helped our pitching staff. Our pitching is good enough to win, just not exceptional. They're young, but they'll learn.”
