LA JOLLA – The Humboldt State softball team took both games from the University of California, San Diego, 1-0 and 10-1, in California Collegiate Athletic Association play
Saturday, to finish the series, 3-1.
With the two wins HSU moves to 9-3 overall and 5-3 in league play, while UCSD falls to 4-4 in conference and 10-8 overall.
"We did the little things right
today," Humboldt State head softball coach Frank Cheek said when asked what was different about
today. "We played like we're suppose to play, we played like national champions. Both of our pitchers had good performances. Our defensive was good, we hit the ball hard and we had many opportunities."
The Jacks took game one in the fifth when
Felicia Viveiros scored on a
Caitlin Klug RBI single to right center.
Taking the win for HSU was
Gracie Perez (3-2) who gave up only one hit, walked two and struck out one. Lauren Chastain (5-3) registered the loss for UCSD striking out one batter, giving up six hits, and one walk.
Heading into the top of the seventh leading 3-1, the Jacks recorded seven runs to secure game two.
Sammi Gilbert started the scoring rally with a single to right center to drive in
Geneva Perrine. Gilbert then scored the second run of the inning when Warren singled, after Klug and
Nikki Ketteringham loaded the bases with a walk a single, respectively.
Natalie Galletly, who was up next for the Jacks, hit a two run double to left center before
Marissa Slattery finished the rally with a three run homer.
The Jacks got on the board first in the third and followed it with a two-run fourth inning.
UCSD tallied it's lone run of the day when Nicole Saari double to right field to bring Amanda Eliades home, unearned, in the bottom of the fourth.
Nichole Parada (2-0) registered the nine-run win, while Christine Zankich picked up the loss.
HSU takes a break from CCAA competition to host a doubleheader against Western Oregon on
Wednesday,
Mar. 4 at 1 p.m.
