Jacks hold Gators at bay in 76-71 win

SAN FRANCISCO — Katie Franci,  Andrea Bobic and Bree Halsey willed Humboldt State to another win Saturday, holding off a San Francisco State comeback attempt on the way to a 76-71 victory in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action.

Franci scored all 15 of her points in the second half and Bobic added a game-high 20, including two free throws that iced the game in the final seconds. Brittney Taylor had 14 points for HSU, and Halsey came off the bench to score 11 with a team-high nine rebounds.

The victory improved HSU to 15-6 overall and 10-4 in the CCAA. San Francisco State dropped to 11-10 overall and 5-9 in league despite 20 points by Desiree Butler, 13 from ZaLisha Oliver and 11 points from Donisha Tate.

Held scoreless in the first half, Franci scored the Jacks' first five points of the second half.  She continued to provide firepower, both inside and out, bombing a three-pointer to give the Jacks a 44-41 lead.

Butler was equal to the task for SFSU, driving for two layups to keep the Gators close, and hitting a wide-open three pointer to tie the game. A minute later, Butler drove for a layup and hit a free throw to provide the Gators a 49-45 lead.

Butler's solo surge continued with an off-balance jumper that gave SFSU a 51-48 lead, and Oliver hit a pair of free throws to extend the Gators lead to 53-48, their largest advantage of the game.

Bobic drained two critical threes to put HSU ahead again, 56-55, and the teams traded buckets for the next three minutes, neither able to pull away. Halsey's steal and court-length drive finally provided some breathing room at 69-63, and Bobic popped a three-pointer from the corner to move Humboldt State ahead by nine with 4:33 remaining.

“This has been a great weekend for Bree Halsey,” HSU head coach Joddie Gleason said. “It's been a coming-out party for her. She did a great job on both ends of the court for us again.”

Humboldt State's starters looked to push the pace right from the tip, but Franci was back on the bench quickly after picking up the very first two fouls of the game.

HSU looked to Taylor for offense, and she responded with a three-pointer form the top of the key, and following a stop on the other end, Paige Peterson found Taylor streaking ahead of the pack for an easy layup. Taylor soon joined Franci, however, after picking up her second foul before seven minutes had passed.

With their two leading scorers on the bench, the Jacks relied on Halsey and Kristina O'Keefe, both of whom made their way room in the paint for baskets as HSU gained a 13-8 lead.

Humboldt State led by as many as nine points, taking a 22-13 advantage when Jennifer Enos worked for a rebound and putback. San Francisco stormed back, helped by HSU turnovers during a six-point run completed by ZaLisha Oliver's 15-foot jumper.

Trisha Alaba's three-pointer ended the surge and started a short one for the Jacks, who stretched the lead to eight on a pair of free throws by Taylor.  But Tate scored on a give-and-go from Hunter to cut it to 27-25, and Oliver's line drive shot tied the game at 27-27.

Free throws ended the half, two by the Gators and one by the Jacks, allowing San Francisco State to take a 29-28 lead into the break.

The Jacks return home next weekend to host Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State on Friday and Saturday, receptively.
