CHICO – The Humboldt State softball team hit the ball hard for the second straight day, completing the series sweep of Chico State with 9-1 and 15-0 wins in California Collegiate Athletic Association play on
Tuesday.
With the win, the Jacks improve to 9-3 in CCAA play and 16-4 overall. It also allows head coach Frank Cheek the chance to get career win No. 1,000 at home this weekend against Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Wildcats fall to 5-18 overall and 3-11 in the CCAA.
“We did what we wanted to do at the plate
today,” Cheek said. “We got hits at the right time and we also laid down some important bunts.”
Scoring early and often was the theme of the day as the Jacks scored four runs in the first inning on RBI singles by
Marissa Slattery and
Geneva Perrine and a two-run double by
Caitlin Klug.
Chico State got one back in the bottom half of the inning on a Jenna Wermes RBI double, but the Jacks put the game away in the top of the second, scoring five runs on five hits. Slattery and Klug recorded RBI singles while Felicia Vivieros and
Chrissy Motzny hit one- and two-run doubles, respectively.
Starter
Nichole Parada (6-1) picked up the win for HSU, going three innings, giving up one run and five hits.
“The top of the order was stinging the ball all day,” Cheek said. “But we also got some good production from the bottom three in our lineup.”
Game two started exactly like the first, with the Jacks scoring four runs in the first inning.
Natalie Galletly singled home the opening run of the game and Slattery doubled home the Jacks' first baseman the next at-bat. Vivieros capped off the inning with a two-run home run to left field.
It was again a five-run second inning for Humboldt State.
Sammi Gilbert led-off the inning with a home run to left. After singles by Ketteringham, Perrine, and Galletly, Slattery delivered the final blow of the second with a grand slam to left to put the Jacks up 9-0.
After a scoreless third inning, Humboldt State got the bats going again in the fourth. Galletly singled up the middle to bring home Ketteringham and Vivieros hit a two-run single up the middle as well.
The Jacks got another three runs to push their lead to 15. Perrine recorded an RBI double and Galletly finished her 4-for-4 day with a two-run RBI single to center.
Lost in all the offense was HSU starter
Gracie Perez, pitching three scoreless innings and only giving up three hits. Parada came in to pitch the final two innings to complete the shutout.
Cheek is four wins short of 1,000 heading into the weekend series against Cal State Dominguez Hill. First pitch at the Humboldt State Softball Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Friday and
Saturday's action begins at 11 a.m.
