ARCATA - It was a tale of two games as the Humboldt State softball team split its doubleheader with Cal State Dominguez Hills, winning the first game 9-0 and dropping the second 6-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action Friday.
The Jacks now stand 17-5 overall and 10-4 in the CCAA. The Toros move to 15-8 overall and 7-3 in CCAA play.
"We're just not very consistent at home right now," Humboldt State head softball coach Frank Cheek said. "We looked like National Champions the first game and then we had trouble in the second."
Game one started with a flurry, as the Jacks scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Lindsay Warren opened the scoring with a RBI single but the big blow of the inning was when Felecia Viveiros hit a grand slam to make an early 5-0 lead.
Humboldt State was at it again in the second, scoring when Warren reached on a fielder's choice and
Caitlin Klug brought home
Natalie Galletly to put the Jacks up 7-0.
The Jacks also recorded one run in each of the next two innings on a sacrifice fly by
Marissa Slattery and on a squeeze by pinch hitter
Ashley Oltjenbruns.
Starter
Nichole Parada (7-1) picked up the win for HSU, going three innings and only allowing one hit.
Game two was the opposite as the Toros were the ones jumping out to an early lead thanks to a big inning. Left fielder Jessica Marlow led off the top of the third with a long solo home run to left field. Khryssi Steele recorded a RBI single three batters later. On the next two at bats Emiley McEwen and Liz Vasquez each recorded RBIs.
Humboldt State came back with one in the bottom of the fourth on a Galletly solo home run, but CSUDH answered back in the next half inning when McEwen singled home a run to put the Toros back up by four runs.
Dominguez Hills stretched its lead to five in the top of the sixth when Katie Jordan singled home Marlow. The Jacks got the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh on a Klug RBI single.
"We got down early and had to play catch up," Cheek said. "We are at the point now where we have to hit the ball if we want to win games."
Humboldt State will conclude its series with Cal State Dominguez Hills tomorrow. Due to weather concerns, the first pitch of the doubleheader has been moved up to 9 a.m.
