ARCATA - Another home doubleheader, another split as the Humboldt State softball team beat Cal State Dominguez Hills the first game 5-2 but dropped the second 6-5 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action Saturday.
The Jacks now stand 11-5 in CCAA play and 18-6 overall. The Toros move to 8-4 in CCAA play and 16-10 overall.
"You can't win conference championships splitting at home," Humboldt State head softball coach Frank Cheek said. "They out-hit us today and beat us."
Just like in the first game yesterday, the Jacks got out to an early lead thanks to
Marissa Slattery's three-run homer to center field.
The Toros scored their first run of the game the next half-inning on a Jessica Marlow RBI single but Humboldt State went back ahead by three in the bottom half of the inning on a
Nikki Ketteringham RBI single.
The Jacks extended their lead to four when
Geneva Perrine lead-off the bottom of the fifth with a home run to center. CSUDH closed the gap to three when Kristin Tanaka reached on a fielder's choice.
HSU starter
Nichole Parada (8-1) went the distance, giving up ten hits and striking out one.
"Parada had a really good weekend," Cheek said. "She threw the ball extremely well."
Game two saw Humboldt State again get out to an early lead, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second.
Caitlin Klug hit a solo home run to open the scoring and
Chrissy Motzny hit a three-run homer three batters later. Slattery recorded a RBI single to cap off the inning.
However, Dominguez Hills fought back, scoring three runs in the top of the fourth off of starter
Gracie Perez. Tanaka smacked a two-run double to get the Toros on the board and Katie Jordan hit a RBI single.
The Toros then tied the game at five the following inning after loading the bases with nobody out. Amber Angel singled to right to cut HSU's lead in half and Kaci Carroll singled to left to even the score.
The Toros then took their first and only lead of the ballgame in the top of the seventh when Liz Vazquez hit a solo home run off of reliever
Jenna Anderson.
"We have to out-hit teams to beat them," Cheek said.
Humboldt State will take a short break from CCAA play and travel to Monmouth, Ore. to face Western Oregon Tuesday and Wednesday. First pitch of Tuesday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. and Wednesday's single game is set for noon.
