Jacks defeat Argonauts 8-2

SAN MATEO - The Humboldt State softball team defeated Notre Dame de Namur, 8-2, at the College of San Mateo's field, Thursday.

The Lumberjacks improved their overall mark to 22-7, while the Argonauts hold an 8-18-1 record.

HSU came out swinging, registering four runs to open the game. Nikki Ketteringham kicked off the inning with a double and was then driven home on a Marissa Slattery RBI single. Next up to bat was Lindsay Warren who doubled to advance Slattery to third and bring Natalie Galletly home. Gallety was hit by the pitch to get on base. Slattery and Warren were brought home when Caitlin Klug singled and then reached second on an error by the center fielder to jump to an early 4-0 lead.

Galletly and Slattery drove runners in on back-to-back at bats in the second and then a Galletly double RBI capped off the game in the sixth.

Recording two runs of its own was NDNU off of single RBIs by Breanna Morales in the bottom of the first and Danielle Gray in the third.

Gracie Perez, who came in on relief for starter Nichole Parada, took home the win to improve her record to 8-3. Perez fanned seven batters and gave up no hits or runs in four innings. Brittany Cowart picked up the loss for the Argonauts for a 1-3 mark.

"We got a chance to play all of our players today," Humboldt State's head softball coach Frank Cheek said. "Our pitchers shouldn't have given up those two runs, but they're still learning."

The Jacks resume California Collegiate Athletic Association play tomorrow at San Francisco State, with game one of the doubleheader slated to start at 1 p.m.
