SAN FRANCISCO - The Humboldt State softball team took its series with San Francisco State, 3-1, with a day two sweep, 4-0 and 4-2, Saturday.
The Lumberjacks improve to 17-7 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play and 23-8 overall, while the Gators drop to 14-17 overall and 6-14 in league.
"SFSU is a tough team," Cheek said. "But today we were able to come out and beat their pitcher (Kendra) Wood who beat us yesterday. We played hard, ran well and got key hits when we needed them."
In game one, HSU shutout SFSU by recording all of its four runs with single-run back-to-back innings.
Geneva Perrine tallied the Jacks first run in the first inning off a
Natalie Galletly double. Perrine reached base on a walk. In the second inning
Francesca West scored, unearned, when
Nikki Ketteringham reached first on an error by the first baseman.
Galletly had a helping hand in the Jacks' collecting their final two runs. In the fifth Galletly scored when
Caitlin Klug singled and then reached first base on a fielder's choice for
Chrissy Motzny to score in the sixth.
Ashley Jackson (7-7) took the loss for SF State giving up only two earned runs and striking out four batters.
The Jacks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead to open game two. Perrine was the first to get on base with a bunt and then advanced to second when
Natalie Galletly drew a walk. Up next,
Marissa Slattery singled to load the bases and was followed when
Lindsay Warren walked and Perrine scored.
Francesca West finished the scoring rally with a double RBI single.
Securing its win, HSU recorded a single run in the top of the sixth when Klug crossed home play off of a
Ashley Oltjenbruns single.
Not giving up, the Gators recorded their only runs of the day when Lea Cardenas doubled to center field to drive in Kelsey Wood and Danielle Chapman, all runs were unearned.
Gracie Perez (11-3) picked up both wins for HSU fanning seven batters and giving up eight hits and two walks on the day. Wood (2-5) registered the loss, striking out two and giving up seven hits, four runs and three walks.
"We threw (Gracie) Perez both games today and she did well," Humboldt State head softball coach Frank Cheek said. "Yesterday (Nichole) Parada got into a little trouble and Perez was able to do well through San Francisco State's lineup. So I thought why not let her continue when she's doing well."
The Jacks take a break from league play with a trip down to Turlock to compete in the Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus, Friday through Sunday.
