ARCATA - Two entirely different games saw the Humboldt State softball team split Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader against Cal State University Stanislaus, dropping the opener 13-7 and winning the second 5-0.

The Jacks now stand 32-15 overall and 20-8 in the CCAA while the Warriors move to 25-15 and 12-12 in conference play.

"This should solidify our spot as the No. 1 team in west," Humboldt State head softball coach Frank Cheek said. "(Stanislaus) can really hit the ball and winning three against the No. 3 team in the region means a lot."

Stanislaus got on the board early and often in game one, scoring five runs in the first two innings. After Erica McIntyre led-off the game with a triple, shortstop Meghan Franksen homered to center against Lumberjack starter Gracie Perez. In the second inning it was McIntyre driving in the runs, hitting a three-run homer to left field against Perez.

The Warriors then doubled their lead in the fourth, going up 10-0 with Franksen's second two-run homer of the game being the highlight of the inning. Britney Borba and Jennifer Arnold also recorded RBIs in the fourth.

It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth with the mercy rule looming over them that the Jacks got their first runs of the game when Lindsay Warren hit her ninth homer of the year.

Stanislaus got two of the three runs back in the next half inning thanks to Alyssa Guzman scoring on a wild pitch and McIntyre's RBI single, her fourth of the game.

The Jacks came as close as they would in the bottom of the sixth, scoring all four runs of the inning on a Nikki Ketteringham grand slam to right field.

"They can really swing the bat," Cheek said. "We walked a lot of people and they made us pay for it."

Game two was a completely different story as the Jacks were the only ones to cross the plate, with their first two runs coming on a Felecia Viveiros home run to left field. Francesca West then pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fourth with an RBI single.

The game broke open the next inning when Marissa Slattery and Natalie Galletly hit back-to-back solo home runs to begin the fifth.

Starter Nichole Parada (11-5) made it look easy at times, going the distance giving up only four hits, walking one, and striking out five.

"Parada pitched one hell of a game for us today," Cheek said. "With the kind of offense Stanislaus has, that says a lot,"

Humboldt State will return to the field Wednesday with a make-up doubleheader against Western Oregon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
