Regular season wraps up this weekend

ARCATA – Finishing its California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season, the Humboldt State softball team travels south to take on Cal State San Bernardino in a six-game, three-day series. Friday's doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m., Saturday's is set for 11 a.m. and Sunday's twinbill gets underway at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday's games will be the only ones counted as league competition.

Lumberjacks Notes
The Lumberjacks enter their final weekend of regular-season competition atop league standings with a 20-8 record and an overall mark of 33-14. HSU has posted a 12-2 road record. …Natalie Galletly leads the team with a .437 batting average (66-for-151) and 13 doubles. Marissa Slattery continues to top the team with 12 homers and 44 RBIs, while hitting .409 (61-for-149). …In the circle, Gracie Perez leads the team with a 2.78 ERA and 15-4 record. Nichole Parada and Jenna Anderson follow with a 2.96 and 3.20 ERA, respectively. …On trends, Slattery is currently on a five-game hitting streak that includes nine hits, six RBIs, five runs scored and four homers. Slattery has posted a .360 batting average in her last five games. Felicia Viveiros has hit safely in three straight games, with four hits, three RBIs, two runs and home runs and one double.

Opponents' Notes
Struggling through a four-game losing streak, the Coyotes enter this weekend's competition with an overall mark of 21-31 and are currently seventh in league standings with a 12-16 record. CSUSB holds a 7-6 record at home. …CSU San Bernardino has three athletes batting over .300, Tori Beaudette and Felicia Shepler both topping the team with a .316 batting average and Ashley Collinwood following with a .307 batting average. Alex Mitchell is the Coyotes' running threat, leading the team with 11 stolen bases on 13 attempts. …CSUSB looks to Debbie Shisler in the circle with a 1.86 ERA and 12-10 record. Shisler is also offensive threat, hitting .284 and is 9-for-14 in stolen bases. “If we can stop (Debbie) Shisler, then we will be able to beat them,” Humboldt State head softball coach Frank Cheek said. “She has a nice screw and curve ball and she can hit. She's also one of three girls who can steal bases.”

Head-to-Head
HSU leads CSUSB in the all-time series with a 28-10 record. Last season, the Jacks defeated the Coyotes six out of the teams' 10 meetings. CSUSB defeated HSU in the CCAA tournament, eliminating them, and then beat the Jacks in the first round of the West Region tournament. HSU Jacks rallied back, defeating the Coyotes, 5-1, to advance to the semi-final and final rounds on their way to winning the West Region and ultimately national tournament.

Cheek's Thoughts
“I think we're playing like a cracked record,” Cheek said. “We're hot and then we're cold. Our hitting and fielding is there, but our pitching in questionable, just like it has been all year. (Gracie) Perez has had some nice outings but right now we need her to step up.” … “This weekend all depends on our pitchers and if we can keep their balls in the park,” Cheek said. “We've changed our lineup a bit to maximize our hitting.” … “I think we're lucky to be in the position we are in,” Cheek said.
