Jacks split day one with Coyotes, 4-2, 3-2

Ashley Oltjenbruns was one of three players who went 2-for-3 in the Jacks 3-2 night cap win
SAN BERNARDINO - A Nikki Ketteringham two-run homer and a Marissa Slattery sacrifice fly helped the Humboldt State softball team salvage a split against Cal State San Bernardino in California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Friday, dropping the opener 4-2 and taking the night cap 3-2.

With the split the Jacks hold a 21-9 CCAA mark and a 34-15 overall record, while the Coyotes move to 13-17 in league play and 22-32 overall.

"We hit into a couple of double plays and just didn't hit well overall," Humboldt State head softball coach Frank Cheek said. "We also didn't have good defense."

Despite dropping the opener, HSU got on the scoreboard first to open the game. Ketteringham and Lindsay Warren got on base with walks before Felicia Viveiros was hit by the pitch to load the bases. Up next with two outs was Geneva Perrine whose RBI single to third gave the Jacks an early 1-0 lead.

The Coyotes quickly took its first lead of the game during their turn at bat with a RBI singles by Priscilla Curiel and Courtney Wilhelms.

The fifth inning showed hope for the Jacks as they tied the game up 2-2 as pinch runner Sammi Gilbert scored on an error.

But once again CSUSB answered back at its next at bat as Gracie Perez hurled a wild pitch with the bases loaded for Tori Beaudette to score to put the Coyotes up 3-2. A double by Wilhelms and an RBI single by Maggie Karros registered an insurance run to take the game 4-2.

Gracie Perez pitched a complete game giving up three earned runs off of six hits, striking out seven and walking two batters. Wilhelms (4-7) picked up the win for the Coyotes fanning one batter, walking five and giving up one earned run off of eight hits.

Game two started in favor of CSUSB as it jumped out to an 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Ashley Collinwood hit a solo home run to right center off of starter Nichole Parada. The Coyotes added another run in the second off of a Jacquelyn Holtzclaw RBI single. Perez then came in to relieve Parada with two outs and the bases loaded to end the inning as Collinwood hit into a force play at the plate.

Ketteringham platted the Jacks' first runs of the game with a two-run blast scoring Ashley Oltjenbruns, who got on base with a single in the fifth.

HSU took the game in the sixth as Caitlin Klug and Oltjenbruns started the inning with back-to-back singles off of CSUSB's reliever Brianne Godfredson (1-4). A wild pitch advanced both runners before Slattery drove in Klug with a sacrifice to deep left center.

Perez registered her 16th win of the season fanning six batters and walking two in 5 1/3 innings. Godfredson (1-4) took the loss giving up one run on three hits.

Natalie Galletly, Francesca West and Oltjenbruns all went 3-2 for the Jacks in the night cap.

The Jacks and Coyotes conclude their league portion of the season with a doubleheader tomorrow at 11 a.m.

"We need to hit the ball and our seniors have to step up," Cheek said about what the team has to do tomorrow.
