Cheek's Thoughts
“I believe we could have won the whole tournament last weekend if we had initiated what we're capable of doing,” Humboldt State head softball coach Frank Cheek said. “We lost games to one pitch, failure to get the bunt down, a missed call, a dropped ball and poor base running. Everything we did wrong at the tournament I know we are capable of doing right. We need to play up to our ability just like our opponents have been doing against us.” … “This weekend is critical for us and Stanislaus,” Cheek said. “Both teams must win to secure places in the conference tournament and west region tournament. I think (Stanislaus') pitching is one up, based on performance thus far, but I think we have a slight edge on hitting and defense, but only a slight edge. Whoever comes out and plays hard this weekend will win. The key for us is to hit their ace (Gaumnitz) like we have in the past, but also prevent the long ball. We can feather are beds or make a race of it this weekend.”
