Gleason's Comments
“This is a huge game for us (vs. UC San Diego), not only in the conference, but for regional standings as well. They haven't lost yet and to give them that first one would be huge. In the regional aspect, because we haven't beaten a top-level team yet, it is also a big game for us. UCSD is a different team this season than they were last year. They were very post oriented as well as having Chelsea Carlisle, who was the Freshman of the Year in the CCAA. The front line players are gone and now they are more balanced and guard oriented with Carlisle, the leading scorer in the league, and (Annette) Ilg. They don't pound it inside as much as before, which makes them tougher because they use more weapons on offense. On defense they are very aggressive and active. They jump into the passing lanes, force a lot of turnovers and try to wear you down by using a lot of people.” … “Cal State East Bay is a team that is itching and hungry to get a win. I'm sure they'd like nothing better than to come up here and knock us off. We need to prepare for them like everyone else we face and come out ready to play despite what their record is. Their roster has turned over since we played them in an exhibition last year. We do know Claudia Nelson, who played for us her freshman season. Typically they want to get out and run. Even though they are new to this level (Division II) they are young, scrappy and they get after it every time they go out.” … “We are happy with the way the team is playing. Obviously we didn't finish the game against Chico State very well or with much confidence, but overall we are playing well. We just can't keep people healthy. Three of our top five guards are injured and that just makes it really difficult to get some continuity out there. I was pleased that when we had the chance to put away (Cal State) Stanislaus we did. At the media timeout before the end of the first half, I challenged the team to pick up the pace and they responded, especially
Andrea Bobic. We pushed the lead out (from five points to 16) in the last five minutes and never let them get any closer in the second half.”
