ARCATA – The Humboldt State women's basketball team came out Saturday night, thoroughly dominated the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay, and walked away with an 82-43 victory in Lumberjack Arena.
The win improves the HSU's record to 12-4 overall, 10-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Cal State East Bay falls to 0-16, 0-11 in conference action.
Box Score
The Jacks offense was led by senior
Andrea Bobic's 18 points and seven rebounds. Bobic made 6-of-8 from behind the 3-point line.
Brittney Taylor had 17 points and three blocks and freshman
Kristen Huffman added 10 points.
Bree Halsey grabbed 14 rebounds for the Jacks and chipped nine points.
The Pioneers were led by freshman Marlene MacMillan, who scored 12 points and Claudia Nelson, a former Lumberjack, who had 10. Lauren Lucchesi led CSUEB with 11 rebounds.
The game was never in doubt as HSU raced to a 13-2 lead in the first seven minutes on three's by Bobic and
Luiza Osborne and a three-point play by Huffman. Once the double-digit lead was established, the Pioneers were never able to get it back down to single digits.
The Jacks, who never trailed in the game, led 46-20 at the half. They outscored CSUEB 22-8 in the paint in the first half, led by 12 points from Taylor on 5-of-6 shooting and Halsey's eight points and 11 rebounds. In addition, HSU had an 18-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Jacks played tough defense, holding Cal State East Bay to 21-percent shooting in the first half while shooting 49-percent themselves.
“Defensively we really got after it and dictated what they could and couldn't do” head coach
Joddie Gleason said. “Their shot selection was pretty poor because of our pressure, but we still need to work on creating that pressure with out committing so many fouls. I was not terribly happy about the amount of times we sent them to the line in the first half.”
A 15-0 run to start the second half gave the Jacks a 61-20 lead with 12:32 to play and allowed coach Gleason to get playing time for everyone on the bench.
“Coming out in the second half we expected the starters to increase the lead in order to get other players some time,” Gleason added.
Two players scored their first collegiate points. Freshman
Kelly Kime, a Eureka High School graduate, hit a 3-pointer and made three free throws and
Molly Todd made one from behind the arc.
HSU outrebounded the Pioneers 55-31 overall, including 23-9 on the offensive glass and had 14 steals. The rebounds and steals were season highs for the team.
“Tonight was a great opportunity to get everyone into the game and get some minutes for all our freshman” Gleason said. “We have very high expectations for them and demand that they do things well. They all did a good job of coming in and giving us quality minutes.”
