Assistant Coach Skip Gleason's Comments
“The difference in facing these teams now is that they are really a different team than the one we saw in December. Rosters are different for both our opponents and ourselves. The big difference for (Cal State) Dominguez (Hills) is the addition of Neka Mixon. She was the conference newcomer of the year last season and offensively she makes them go. She can score from behind the 3-point line, she can penetrate to set herself up and other players as well. The first time we saw them they didn't have that weapon and were struggling to score points. She changes them a lot. We have to stop their penetration and keep them off the foul line.” … “For (Cal State) Los Angeles, Jazzi Johnson is scoring off the bench and is as athletic as they come in our conference. She really does a good job of getting to the basket, so it is kind of the same story as Dominguez. They don't shoot the 3-point shot as much as Dominguez, so we expect them to penetrate and will have to do a good job of controlling it and keeping them off the line. We have to make them earn baskets with out fouling or putting them on the line.” … “Andrea (Bobic) is a real scorer, not just a shooter and she stepped up last weekend. We needed her to do that with the injuries we have suffered at the guard position. Teams can't just focus on our post play, they have to respect the outside game and that makes us much more of a tough matchup. On defense we have changed a few things that we were doing. We are getting a little more aggressive on the perimeter and have gone to more fronting and ¾ fronting of the post. We are trying to dictate a little more what our opponents can do. If you look at the assist totals of the teams we are playing, they are down and that is a direct result of our defense. With the win against UCSD, we are once again in control of our own destiny. We are within a half game of first place and don't need to rely on anyone else having to doing something to help us. We are happy with our team and where we are. The energy is great. Now that everyone has had a chance to see everyone else, you can kind of size teams up and know where you stand. We like where we are.”
