Jacks win thriller at SFSU 50-49

Brittney Taylor's double-double led to a Jacks win at SFSU
SAN FRANCISCO - With 12 seconds left and the Jacks clinging to a 50-49 lead, senior Brittney Taylor blocked a shot by San Francisco State's Sidney Dobner to preserve a hard fought win for the Humboldt State women's basketball team on Sunday night.

The win improves the Jacks record to 8-2 overall and 6-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.  SFSU is now 5-8, 1-4 in conference.

Box Score

Taylor finished the night with a double-double, 18 points and 14 rebounds, and added five blocked shots.  Bree Halsey had seven points and 15 rebounds as the Jacks remained perfect in the CCAA, their best conference start in head coach Joddie Gleason five plus years.

The Lumberjacks got off to a quick start, building a 9-4 lead in the first three minutes of the game, but the Gators then went on a 13-0 over the next four minutes to build their biggest lead of the half, 8 points, at 17-9.

Despite shooting just 24 percent (7-of-29) for the half and committing 11 turnovers, the Jacks stayed within striking distance and trailed 32-26 at the break.

A jumper 15 seconds into the second half pushed the Gators lead back to eight, 34-26.  Over the next eight minutes the Jacks battled and cut the lead eventually tying the game twice, at 38-38 with just over 11 minutes to play and again at 42-42 with 6:46 left.

Paige Peterson's jumper with 5:37 to go, gave the Jacks their first lead, 44-42, since early in the first half.  The teams stayed within a bucket for the nex five minutes.

With 23 seconds remaining and the game tied 49-49, Andrea Bobic was fouled and hit one of two free throws to give the Jacks a 50-49 lead.  Dobner, who led the Gators with 17 points, drove down the right side of the lane where Taylor swatted her shot away.   Dobner had one more opportunity with one second remaining, but the ball went off the rim for the Jacks win.

“This was a game that we knew was going to be a battle, going to be a war on the boards, so that is what we prepared for,” said Gleason.  “Our focus was to keep them off the boards and I think the nine offensive rebounds we got are a testament to that effort.  It was a complete team effort tonight.”
