Box Score

“(Cal Poly) Pomona out worked us tonight,” said head coach Joddie Gleason.  “They out played us, out hustled us, got to all the loose balls and beat us on the boards.  You can't go on the road and expect to win when you allow that to happen.”

The Broncos were led by Stephisha Walton's 18 points and 18 rebounds and 11 points and six rebounds from La'Kenya Simon-West.  HSU was paced by Bree Halsey with 15 points and four rebounds.  Paige Peterson had eight points and six rebounds and Luzia Osborne scored eight off the bench.

The Jacks actually jumped out to a 4-0 lead on baskets by Halsey and Peterson.  After a 3-pointer by Kayla Williams, with 11:50 left in the half, HSU had an 11-7 lead.
But, over the next four minutes, CPP went on a 14-2 run led by four points from Walton and four turnovers by the Lumberjacks.

With 4:32 left in the half, Deja Kinsey hit a layup to bring the Jacks to within five at 26-21, but CPP finished the half on a 10-1 run and took a 36-22 lead into the half.

In the first 20 minutes the Lumberjacks were out shot from the field, the free-throw line and were out rebounded.  HSU made just nine of 35 attempts for 25 percent while Cal Poly Pomona shot 44 percent on 11-for-25 shooting from the field.

From the line, CCP made 11-of-15 attempts to HSU's three of six.  On the boards the Broncos topped the Lumberjacks 28-15.  Walton led the Broncos with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

In the second half HSU never got closer than 11 points and trailed by as many as 23 before falling 66-50.

For the game the Humboldt State shot 30 percent from the field (19-of-63) and just 40 percent from the free-throw line (4-of-15).  They were out rebounded 50 to 36.

“We were tired from last night's game, but they (Cal Poly Pomona) had to play last night, as well,” Gleason said.  “When you don't hit shots it's easy to stop playing defense.  We just didn't show very much mental toughness to over come adversity.

“We'll bounce back from this game and be fine.  We have a big game on Thursday against Chico (State) and we'll be ready for that one.”
