On Saturday, Humboldt State struggled with its shooting touch and the overall speed of the Western Oregon team. The undersized, but quick Wolves, frustrated the Jacks' offensive efforts and created opportunities for themselves to score.
"We didn't respond to the way they play," HSU head coach
Joddie Gleason said. "We let them build a lead on us and that made it hard to come back."
The Wolves moved ahead by as many as 11 points in the opening half, but a 3-pointer by HSU's
Taylor Kilgore trimmed the margin to one. But WOU's Jade Haas drove for a layup and was fouled, converting the free throw to put the Wolves up, 41-37 at the half.
Humboldt State started the second half strong, forging a four-point lead on
Jeanette DeWitt's layup and free throw. The Jacks extended it to five on
Lisa Petty's free throw, but that's as large as a cushion as HSU would enjoy.
Western Oregon rallied, moving up by nine on a 3-pointer by Jamie Richardson with 5 minutes, 21 seconds remaining. HSU whittled it down to four again, but the Wolves hit six straight free throws in the waning minutes to seal the win.
DeWitt, who was named to the all-tournament team, posted a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds to pace HSU.
Jenna Hamilton scored 15 points, Catie Richards added 13, and
Bree Halsey contributed 10 points and nine rebounds for the Jacks.
Rylee Peterson led a balanced WOU offense with 20 points. Sara Zahler scored 18, Danielle Bellando had 12, and Richardson added 11 for the Wolves.
