Jacks look ahead to back-to-back road games

ARCATA —  The Lumberjack women's basketball team will hit the road for a doubleheader this weekend in hopes to regain momentum in two key conference games.  Humboldt will visit Chico for Friday night's match-up against the undefeated Wildcats before heading to Turlock to face Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday.  The Jacks fell in their opening CCAA conference game this past weekend, losing to Sonoma State, 73-65 at home.

Head-to-Head
Chico State leads the all-time series against the Jacks with an astounding margin, 56-17.  Humboldt lost both regular season conference games to the Wildcats in 2009-10, but earned their lone victory over the Wildcats in the CCAA tournament before falling again in the NCAA West Region Tournament. The two teams have been matching up since the 1973-74 season. …The Humboldt State and Cal State Stanislaus all-time series is tight battle.  The Jacks fall just short of the Warriors, 26-28.  The teams split the 2009-10 series, with both teams winning on their home courts.  In the Coach Gleason era…the Jacks have won seven of the last eight match-ups.

Coach Joddie Gleason
Joddie Gleason enters her seventh season at the helm of the Humboldt State's women's basketball program, after leading the 2009-10 squad to a 20-11 overall record and 14-8 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.  Finishing in a tie for fourth place in the conference, the Jacks went on a three-game tear and won the CCAA Tournament and earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  It was the team's third NCAA Division II West Regional birth in the last five years and just the fourth in school history.  Under Gleason, the Lumberjacks have won more games in the past five years than in any other six-year period and her .645 winning percentage is by far the best in school history. In her six years at HSU, Gleason has amassed a 107-69 overall mark and is 75-46 in league contests (54-31 in the CCAA and 21-15 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference).

“It seems so early for conference to start…and all the craziness has started.” But the Jacks and Kilgore are no stranger to success.  “We are really looking to get a good conference run.”  Kilgore is confident the team chemistry will continue to build.  “We definitely have a core group of returners but also some new girls and transfers.  This last road trip we were very focused and we will continue to work on meshing with good chemistry,” she said.  Kilgore's uplifting attitude is a clear indication of why her leadership position is so important on the team.  “I enjoy being a leader.  I am ready to take on that position and being the only senior it's my job and get on it.  I love the relationship that I have with all my players so it just comes naturally.”

Lumberjack Notes
The Jacks are one game into conference play and HSU head coach, Joddie Gleason, is focusing on defense after the recent loss against Sonoma State.  “We need to be more efficient and more physical at the post without fouling,” said Gleason.  The Lumberjack defense has been an on-going struggle and a glaring weakness in Gleason's eyes. … Chico is coming off a great performance from guard, Natasha Smith.  “Natasha is one of the top guards in the conference… it is going to take a group effort to slow her down,” Gleason said of the standout senior.  …The Jacks' offense is more of a positive aspect but Gleason is still not satisfied with her team's discipline.  “We are scoring alright but we are settling for the first open look.  We can't let them (the opponent) force us to shoot poorly,” said Gleason.  …The two-game road trip makes preparing for the second game against Cal State Stanislaus more of a challenge.  “We don't get as much time which makes it tougher. But after Friday's game we can look at the general tendencies of Stanislaus and evaluate.”…”The newer players will be more comfortable on this road trip and (they) now understand our schedule after traveling to Western Oregon in the beginning,” concluded Gleason.

Opponents' Notes

Chico State brings a 4-0 (CCAA, 2-0) record into Friday's game.  The Wildcats defeated Cal State Stanislaus (88-80) on Saturday night to maintain their perfect record.  Senior guard Natasha Smith led the Wildcat squad with 28 points in Saturday's game. …Cal State Stanislaus' record currently stands at 1-3 (CCAA, 0-2).  The Warriors rallied against Chico State in their last match-up, reducing the half-time margin of 22 points to just 8 by the end of the game.  Senior forward, Katie Busi led the Warriors with 22 points.

Gleason's Comments

“Chico is a force to reckoned with.  They apply a lot of pressure and they play very good defense.”…”I am used to playing there now (referring to Gleason's Chico State alma mater).  It is fun to play there but it has to be treated like a business trip.”…”I am pleased with Jenna Hamilton's play. She continues to do a great job for us.”…”In this last game Elle Anderson and Kelly Kime came in off the bench and gave us quality minutes.”
