ARCATA — Humboldt State's Taylor Boggs has been honored by the American Football Coaches Association as an All-American, the AFCA announced Wednesday.
Selected by a panel of coaches representing all eight NCAA Division II districts, the AFCA chooses only 11 players on offense, 11 on defense and three on special teams. Boggs was previously named to the Daktronics All-Super Region 4 first team.
Boggs has also been chosen to participate in the Cactus Bowl, an annual all-star game showcasing the top seniors in Division II. The event will be held on January 7 in Kingsville, Texas, and will be webcast live at http://www.cactusbowl.org/media_galleries/game_webcast.aspx. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CST.
Boggs, the Jacks' senior center, is the first Lumberjack player chosen to participate in the game since standout wide receiver Dustin Creager earned the honor in 2004. The game, along with pregame practices, is an opportunity for NFL scouts to evaluate the players.
Following the Jacks' 8-3 season, Boggs was named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year. He is also a three-time all-GNAC first team selection.
This year, Boggs led the blocking for HSU's running game, which accumulated a GNAC best 2,239 yards. The 6-3, 303-pound Boggs was ranked No. 13 among all centers in all divisions nationwide in ESPN's preseason NFL draft rankings.
Boggs has twice been honored as a Strength and Conditioning All-American. He attended Upland High School in Upland, Calif., where he was a first-team all-conference offensive lineman.
