Head-to-Head
Humboldt has a chance to tie the all-time series against UC San Diego in which they currently trail, 6-7. The Jacks won three of the four match-ups with the Tritons last year.
Lumberjack Notes
A strong sense of determination is what carried the Humboldt State women's basketball team to victory at Lumberjack Arena this past weekend. “It was definitely nice to get wins at home,” said HSU head coach, Joddie Gleason. “This is a boost in our team confidence because we have been so close in so many games…it just helps.” …With the team in the heart of final exam week and a big match-up against UC San Diego, Gleason knows her team has a lot on their plate. “I gave them a few days off for finals and then film tomorrow. We will hit regular practice hard on Thursday-Saturday,” commented Gleason. …Humboldt will face UC San Diego in a tough match-up before heading into the holiday break. “San Diego will be ready to play on their home court,” said Gleason. UC San Diego's go-to-girl, Chelsea Carlisle, is the returning 2009-2010 Player of the Year. “Everything goes through her,” said Gleason of the standout junior. “It can't be a one-on-one battle…all five people have to know where she is,” she added. …Although the Jacks are going in one game down in the all-time series, the Tritons know Humboldt is a force to be reckoned with. “We matched up fairly well player-to-player last year,” said Gleason in regards to Humboldt's three wins last season. “We expect a battle down there,” she concluded.
Opponent's Notes
UC San Diego holds a 4-6 (CCAA, 2-1) record going into this weekend's match-up. Four players from UCSD are averaging double-digit scoring. …Chelsea Carlisle leads the Tritons in scoring and is recording just fewer than five rebounds per game. Carlisle put up 46 points in the game against Grand Canyon, in which UC San Diego lost in triple overtime.
Coach Joddie Gleason
Joddie Gleason enters her seventh season at the helm of the Humboldt State's women's basketball program, after leading the 2009-10 squad to a 20-11 overall record and 14-8 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Finishing in a tie for fourth place in the conference, the Jacks went on a three-game tear and won the CCAA Tournament and earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. It was the team's third NCAA Division II West Regional birth in the last five years and just the fourth in school history. Under Gleason, the Lumberjacks have won more games in the past five years than in any other six-year period and her .651 winning percentage is by far the best in school history. In her six years at HSU, Gleason has amassed a 109-71 overall mark and is 75-48 in league contests (54-33 in the CCAA and 21-15 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference).
Jack Tracks: Kayla Williams Player Thoughts
Class: Junior
Hometown: Seattle, Washington
High School: Ballard HS
There are victories in a season that will never be forgotten. For the 2010 HSU Jacks it will be when Kayla Williams swished a buzzer-beating shot…but not for the win…merely to force overtime. The rest is history. “I was excited to be a part of it,” beamed Williams. “I was shocked and not expecting it to go in,” she added. …Williams is pleased with how the team seems to be getting into a groove with each other. “I think we got an offensive flow against Dominican that we haven't had with each other (in the past),” commented Williams. “Coach (Gleason) has been challenging us and I think we have stepped up,” she added. …With the holidays around the corner, Williams and the Jacks still have one game of focus to get through. “I think it is a challenge mentally with the holidays and getting excited of going home…but we are always stoked to play them (UC San Diego) regardless…we just need to stay focused during practice and it will carry over to the game,” said Williams. “Last year we had a successful season with a sequence of games that we lost…so this year our bump was in the beginning of the season. The best is yet to come from our team,” concluded Williams.

Gleason's Comments
“Caitie (Richards) is out with a broken hand after Saturday's game…which is a loss for us. She is a huge contributor on offense. She worked extremely hard this summer and got into great shape with better endurance and quickness.”…”I'm not surprised about Kayla…she is a junior in our program and is a smart player that knows the offense. After talking to her and giving her the opportunity as a starter she really stepped up this week.”…”The holiday break will give them time to relax. They are in really good shape right now so we will just continue those intense workouts when they return.”
