Jacks prevail over Tritons in double overtime

LA JOLLA –  As if 40 minutes of basketball is not enough. The Humboldt State women's team decided to challenge the UC San Diego Tritons to a double overtime.  The Jacks, who once trailed by as much as 13 points, defeated the Tritons on the road, 94-88 Sunday.

The Jacks continue their win streak and enter the holiday break with a California Collegiate Athletic Association conference win, the first of the season.  Humboldt won back-to-back non-conference games in Humboldt last weekend and looked at this cross-state rival game as a great way to continue the momentum.  The Jack now stand 4-4 (1-3, CCAA) for the season.

Humboldt was led by Jeanette DeWitt who recorded a career high double-double.  She totaled 16 rebounds and 25 points in the Jacks victory.

"It was awesome," beamed DeWitt.  "We were down by so much at one point...so after we were down and came back...we had to win," she added.

Humboldt prepared all week for UC San Diego standout and 2010 Conference Player of the Year, Chelsea Carlisle.  Carlisle led the Tritons with 29 points but Humboldt was able to stop Carlisle in the last key minutes of overtime play.

"Whenever we would make a run...Chelsea would answer," said HSU head coach, Joddie Gleason.  "But in the end, we came out and executed well," she added.

The Tritons were successful in shutting down junior sensation Bree Halsey in the first half of play but Halsey squeezed out another double-double, 12 points 10 rebounds, by the end.  Humboldt continues to see consistent play from Kayla Williams with 19 points, Jenna Hamilton with 17 points, and Lisa Petty who added 12.

"I am so impressed with the girls tenacity," said Gleason.  "They kept clawing and fighting to cut it to single digits...just a great team effort." she concluded.

Humboldt will take a break for the holidays and will resume conference play for a double-header on the road against Cal State East Bay on December 30 and Sonoma State on January 2.
