HAYWARD - The Humboldt State women's basketball team continues on a streak in the right direction.
The Jacks defeated CSU East Bay on the road in Hayward, 64-48.
The Jacks appeared to be rusty in the first half of play after returning from 10 days of rest from California Collegiate Athletic Association conference games. Humboldt and East Bay, combined, totaled 53 turnovers for the outing. The victory against East Bay puts them 2-3 while the Pioneers fall 0-5 for CCAA play.
“There was no energy or passion or urgency in the first half,” said HSU head coach Joddie Gleason. “We talked about it at half-time and it changed in the second half,” she added.
With six minutes to play in the first half, Humboldt trailed East Bay by a game-high 13 points. The Jacks cut the halftime lead to just six with big plays and determination from Lisa Petty and Kayla Williams.
“We were getting descent looks but not putting them away,” commented Gleason. “We finally relaxed a little bit and got into a rhythm,” she added.
Humboldt looked to be repeating their first half slump when they took the court after the break. The Jacks did not score for over two minutes in the second half before back-to-back steals and layups from Bree Halsey and a spark from Petty. Petty, who totaled 18 points for the game, had eight consecutive points for the Jacks in three consecutive possessions.
“Lisa was hot so we had to get her back in the game,” said Gleason. “This was her best game and a good homecoming for her to have,” she added.
The Jacks will travel home to Humboldt before returning to face Sonoma State on Sunday for another matinee game at 1 pm. Humboldt will look to extend the winning streak to five.
“When u play for Humboldt State you travel a lot,” said Gleason. “We just have to be ready for Sonoma (State) on Sunday,” concluded Gleason.
