CARSON – Humboldt State rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth innings to tie the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros, but an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh sank the Jacks hopes of a comeback win as they dropped a 6-5 decision in a non-conference game on Sunday.
The loss leaves HSU with an overall record of 2-5, while CSUDH is now 6-1.
Box Score
The Lumberjacks got on the board in the top of the first. With two outs and runners on first and third, Allyson Blenis rapped a two-run double to centerfield to give HSU a quick 2-0 lead.
In the circle, Jacks starter
Gracie Perez gave up a two-run inside the park homerun and a solo shot in the bottom of the first. She was lifted after recording just one out and allowing three runs. After one, the Toros led 3-2.
In the second HSU had two runners in scoring position with one out, but a
Nikki Ketteringham strikeout and a
Gia Hampton groundout ended the threat.
CSUDH added single runs in the second and fourth to extend their lead to 5-2
In the Lumberjacks' fifth, Hampton got a one-out single and was lifted for a pinch runner. Three batters later, with runners on first and second, Blenis hit an RBI single to left. A walk to pinch-hitter
Felicia Viveiros again gave the Jacks runners on first and second, but a foul out ended the rally. HSU trailed 5-3.
HSU opened their half of the sixth with back-to-back walks. Ketteringham had an RBI double down the left field line to make it a one run game. With runners on second and third, Hampton hit a sacrifice fly to plate the tying run. A walk left HSU with runners at the corners and one out, but again they could not push another run across and as they went to the bottom of the sixth the score was 5-5.
The Toros went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.
In the Jacks seventh, they put two runners on with two outs, failed to plate the go ahead run.
CSUDH got a single and moved the runner up with a sac bunt to open their half of the inning. A fielder's choice advanced the runner to third, a single scored the winning run and the Toros had taken four of five games over the weekend.
Vaneza Hoover was tagged with the loss. She is now 0-4.
Blenis (3-for-4, 3 RBI), Hampton (1-for-2, 1 run, 1 RBI) and
Serena Aragones (1-for-3, 1 run) led the HSU offense. Others contributing were Ketteringham (1-for-5, 1 RBI), Hiatt (2-for-4) and Gilbert (0-for-1, 1 run).
Humboldt State pounded out nine hits and scored five runs, which were their most since a season-opening 6-2 win against San Francisco State.
"We played better on offense today," head coach Frank Cheek said. "We were better, but we are not hitting the way we should be.
"Hoover pitched well, but the errors by our infielders are causing us wins. We can not afford to give team extra outs. They lead to runs and that is what we say today."
