ARCATA — Andreanna Marshall and Christin Gowen fueled a late comeback, helping Cal State Stanislaus upset Humboldt State, 70-67 in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action Friday.
Cal State Stanislaus improved its record to 7-16 on the season and 6-13 in league, dropping the Jacks to 16-7 and 14-5. The defeat puts a dent in HSU's hopes of claiming a regular season league title.
The Warriors stormed back from a 12-point deficit, pulling within 64-62 on Marshall's jumper from the free throw line, then Gowan's drive and bank shot tied the game at 64-64 with two minutes remaining.
Marshall gave her team its first lead since early in the opening half with a pair of free throws, and the Warriors held on in the final minute to preserve the win.
Gowan led the Warriors in scoring with 24 points, with Katie Busi adding 16 and Alishea Kelly 10. Brittney Taylor put up a career-best 33 points for Humboldt State, but the only Jack to join her in double figures was Andrea Bobic with 10 points.
In the early going, HSU edged ahead, 7-3 on two consecutive post moves by Taylor, but a baseline drive by Gowan and three free throws from Kelly gave the Warriors a lead.
Busi kept it going with a layup, but Bobic 3-pointer tied it again. The Jacks were the first to flex their offensive muscles, Catie Richards' 3-pointer helping fuel a 15-0 run that put the Jacks up, 25-10.
Nathalie Olveda finally ended the Jacks' surge with a follow-up to her own missed shot. Gowan drained consecutive long 3-pointers and also made four free throws, trimming the Jacks' lead to 35-28 by halftime.
Cal State Stanislaus found renewed vigor in the second half, pulling within two points 43-41 on two free throws by Olveda. But Bobic's 3-pointer punctuated a 11-2 Lumberjack run that again extended the lead to double digits.
HSU remains on the road for Saturday's game against Chico State.
