Jacks sweep No. 14 Sonoma State in regular-season finale

ROHNERT PARK – Nikki Ketteringham went 6-for-8 and Lindsay Warren added three hits as the Humboldt State softball team swept its regular season finale against the No. 14 Sonoma State Seawolves, 3-1 and 5-0, on Saturday.

The wins improve the Jacks record to 32-23 overall, 21-15 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.  The Seawolves are now 38-15, 24-12 in conference play.

HSU finished the season winning 19 of its last 23 games and taking four of its final five series.  A split with UC San Diego the only set the Jacks did not win outright.

Kettreringham, the reigning CCAA Player of the Week, knocked in six of the Jacks eight runs on the day, including the game-winners in both halves of the twin bill.  She also scored three times.

She led off game one with her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot, to give the Jacks a 1-0 lead.

In the Seawolves fourth, Rachel Vanyi, got the first hit off starter Gracie Perez, a two-out solo home run.  Perez had pitched a perfect game up to that point, retiring the first 11 batters she faced.  After four the game was tied 1-1.

In the fifth, HSU retook the lead.  Geneva Perrine got a two-out double and scored on a Ketteringham single.  Two batters later Chrissy Stalf singled to left to plate Ketteringham and putting the Lumberjacks back in front 3-1.

Sonoma State, got a one-out single in the sixth followed by a walk, but Perez induced a foul out to first base and a fly out to left to end the threat.

In the seventh, Perez set the side down in order to win the game and improve her record to 15-9 on the season.  The reigning, two-time Pitcher of the Week, allowed just two hits while striking out seven in what may be the final appearance of her college career.  If it is, in just two years, she is sixth in strike outs with 282, eighth in starts (56), tied for eighth in complete games (30), and tenth in total wins (34) and innings pitched (333.1) on the programs all-time list.

In the second game Ketteringham knocked in four runs.  The first two came in the second inning, on a two-out double down the left field line to stake the Jacks to a 2-0 lead.

HSU starter Vaneza Hoover loaded the bases on three walks in the bottom of the second, but worked her way out of trouble by inducing a ground out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the third, Sonoma State had runners on second and third with two outs, but Hoover got out of it again with a pop up to second.

HSU busted the game open in the sixth with three runs on three hits.  Kirsten Nouzovsky singled to open the inning.  A bunt by Erin Guidarelli put runner on first and second.  Pinch hitter Claire Hoose was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs.  Two batters later, after a double play, Ketteringham doubled down the left field line to score two runs.  Warren then singled to score Ketteringham, but was cut down try to advance to second on the throw home.  HSU led 5-0.

Hoover closed out the final two innings allowing a hit and securing the win.  She pitched a complete game in earning her 14th win against 10 losses.  She struck out two and allowed four hits.

Despite taking three of four games from the Seawolves, the Jacks have been eliminated from the CCAA Tournament.  With Chico State's four-game sweep of Cal Stat e Stanislaus they finish with a 21-14 record half a game ahead of HSU at 21-15.
