HSU hopes to play eight games this week

ARCATA – This week, weather permitting, the Humboldt State softball team (16-19, 5-11 CCAA) will attempt to play two California Collegiate Athletic Association series.

On Tuesday and Wednesday the Jacks will host the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay in a series that was postponed from last Friday and Saturday.  First pitch for Tuesday's doubleheader is scheduled for 10 a.m. at McKinleyville High School, and then on Wednesday the doubleheader will be at Arcata High School with a 1 p.m. start time.

On Friday and Saturday HSU plays host to the UC San Diego Tritons for another pair of doubleheaders.  Both days' games are scheduled for HSU Softball Field with Friday's games getting under way at 1 p.m. and Saturday's at 11 a.m.

Head-to-Head
HSU hold a 66-25 lead in the all-time series with Cal State East Bay.  The two first met in the 1968 season, the Lumberjacks first year fielding a team.  CSUEB was known then as Cal State Hayward and the team split the two games.  The teams have been in three conferences together.  The Golden State Conference, the Northern California Athletic Association and now the CCAA.  The last meeting was in 2002 and the Jacks took a 5-0 win.  HSU and the Pioneers met in the championship game of the Mizuno Tournament of Champions' Bronze Bracket two weeks ago.  The Jacks defeated CSUEB 8-0 in six innings. … The Jacks have won 19 of the 25 meetings between UCSD and HSU.  The two squads met five times last season with the Tritons taking the first and last games.  The last, a 8-0 win the CCAA Tournament.

Lumberjacks Notes
The Jacks haven't played since they captured the Bronze Bracket Championship at the Mizuno Tournament of Champions in Turlock on March 28.  HSU is in eighth place in the CCAA. … The Lumberjack offense is led freshman Chrissy Stalf (.363 BA, 41 H, 16 R, 9 2B, 2 HR, 25 RBI) and junior Nikki Ketteringham (.343 BA, 37 H, 20 R, 6 2B, 3 3B, 9 RBI, 3-3 SB). In the circle, freshman Vaneza Hoover has a team best 2.29 ERA with 67 strikeouts in 110.0 innings.  She has an 8-9 record in 18 starts and 20 total appearances.  Gracie Perez, a senior, has a 6-6 record and a 2.76 ERA.  She has 79 strikeouts in 83.2. … As a team, the Jacks are hitting .288 (third in the CCAA), the team ERA is 2.96 (fifth in the CCAA) and the fielding percentage is .960 (seventh in the CCAA).

Cal State East Bay Notes
The Pioneers (12-20, 5-15 CCAA) are in ninth place in the conference.  Last week they took a pair of games from Menlo College 10-0 and 6-1. … CSUEB is led by Sarah Davini (.299 BA, 20 H, 16 R, 4 2b, 6 RBI, 4-6 SB), Rachelle Boone (.293 BA, 24 H, 5 R, 1 HR, 19 RBI) and Emily Montanez (.292 BA, 26 H, 14 RBI). In the circle, Catherine Schorn has a 4.29 ERA and a 7-9 record in 14 starts and 25 total appearances. … Barbara Price leads the Pioneers in her fourth season at the helm of the team.

UC San Diego Notes
The Tritons (25-13, 15-9 CCAA) are in third place in the CCAA.  Last week they split a four-game conference series with Cal State Dominguez Hills. … The Tritons' offense is led by Kris Lesovsky (.438 BA, 53 H, 32 R, 13 2B, 6 HR, 24 RBI, 3-5 SB), Nicole Saari (.384 BA, 43 H, 8 2B, 22 RBI) and Nicole Spangler (.299 BA, 26 H, 16 RBI). … In the circle, Camille Gaito has a 13-6 record with a 0.63 ERA in 121.1 innings and has struck out 98 batters. … The Tritons are led by Patti Gerckens who is in her 18th year at UCSD.
