Early goal dooms Jacks

ARCATA – Cal State San Bernardino got a goal in the second minute and rode it to a 3-0 win over the Humboldt State men's soccer team in both teams California Collegiate Athletic Association opener on Friday night in Redwood Bowl.

CSUSB's Jose Godinez took a shot from beyond 30 yards at the 1:19 mark that sailed just over the outstretched hand of Jacks keeper Kyle Verle and gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead.

“From that spot on the field, you never expect someone to take a shot, let alone one that finds the back of the net,” HSU head coach Christian Johnson said. “It was just one of those things that happens, but then the team is on their heals right from the start.”

The Coyotes got their next score in the 36th minute when Obi Agwu scored his fifth goal of the year as he tucked the ball in the lower left corner of the net.  Godinez earned the assist on a well-played throughball and CSUSB was up 2-0.

The Jacks finally took their first shot of the period in the 41st minute and as time expired in the half got their second.  They were outshot 8-to-2 in the first 45 minutes.

Cal State San Bernardino finished the scoring as Godinez got his second of the night at he 62:55 mark.

The Jacks were outshot 13-to-8 on the night.  Verle made five saves.  His record now stands at 0-2-1.  Tanner Olinger, the Coyotes keeper, also have five saves in earning his second win of the year.

“At this point we, the coaching staff, are stunned that we have not found the back of the net,” Johnson said.  “We just have score and things will get better.  We are pressing and not possessing the ball and making the smart pass or play.”
