Jacks tie UCSD in physical battle

Josh Suggs scored his second goal of the season against UCSD.
ARCATA – Despite being hit with eight yellow and two red cards, the Humboldt State men's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie with Tritons of UC San Diego on Friday night in Redwood Bowl.

The tie leaves the Jacks record at 1-2-2 overall, 1-1-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.  UCSD falls to 0-3-2, 0-2-1 in conference play.

In the first half, the play was dominated by UCSD.  The majority of the first 45 minutes were played in the Triton offensive zone.   UCSD out shot the Jacks 11-2 while HSU picked up 12 fouls and two yellow cards.

Despite the lopsided play the teams went to the locker room tied 0-0.

At the 75:12 mark the Tritons committed a foul inside the 18-yard box and HSU was awarded a penalty kick.  Josh Suggs took it and hammered it to the back of the net to give the Jacks a 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately the lead was short lived.

Barely a minute later, at the 76:22 mark the Tritons evened the score.  Adam Zernik took a free kick from 40 yards out.  He played it into the box where Jared Kukura headed it past keeper Kyle Verle to make it 1-1.

Then the yellow cards started coming.  In the final 15 minutes of regulation HSU was hit with two.  The first overtime saw the Jacks collect three more and in the final overtime period two red cards were given out the HSU players.

On the night the Jacks were out shot 19-to-13 and UCSD took six cornerkicks to HSU's one.  The Jacks were hit with 31 penalties while UCSD collected 17.

Both keepers made three saves apiece in earning the tie.
