Jacks open CCAA play this weekend

ARCATA – After a tough week on the road, the Humboldt State men's soccer team (0-1-1, 0-0-0 CCAA) opens conference play by welcoming the No. 10 ranked Coyotes of Cal State Bernardino on Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.  Then on Sunday, the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos are in town for a 2 p.m. tilt. The California Collegiate Athletic Association action takes place in Redwood Bowl.

The Jacks earned a tie and suffered a loss last week in Washington.  On Friday they tied Seattle Pacific 0-0, then on Monday, in Bellingham, they lost 1-0 to Western Washington.

Head-to-Head

Humboldt State's record against Cal State San Bernardino is 1-5-0.   Last season the Coyotes defeated the Jacks 2-1 in San Bernardino.  It was the third consecutive win for CSUSB in the series.  The only time HSU beat CSUSB was a 3-2 result in 2006 in Arcata.  HSU is 1-1-0 all-time against the Coyotes on its home field. … Against Cal Poly Pomona, the Lumberjacks trail in the all-time series 2-5-0.  The Broncos downed HSU 3-0 last season in Pomona and are 3-1-0 as CCAA rivals.  HSU's lone win against CPP, in conference, was a 2-1 victory in 2008.

Johnson's Comments
“We have to show up prepared to play.  We did against SPU but not at Western Washington.  We have a couple of days to fix some things, but if we play the way we did in Bellingham we will struggle.” … “(CSU) San Bernardino had a great season last year and didn't graduate many players.  They will be tough to beat.  They have already defeated Saint Martin's who was picked to win the GNAC.  This is as important a game as we may play this season.” … “With (Cal Poly) Pomona I don't quite know what to expect.  They have a lot of new players so tactically we are not sure what kind of a team they will show up with.”

Lumberjack Notes

HSU is 8-2-0 in home openers dating back to the 2000 season. They are 2-1-1 in CCAA home openers since joining the conference in 2006. … Senior Josh Suggs leads the Jacks attack with nine shots of which four have been on-goal.  Junior Brian Holmes has taken four shots.  Keeper Kyle Verle is 0-1-1 while playing all 200 minutes.  He has made nine saves in the 10 shots that have been on frame and his goals against average is 0.45.

Opponents Notes
The Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes (2-0-0, 0-0-0 CCAA) opened last weekend with 3-1 and 3-0 wins over Saint Martin's and Colorado State-Pueblo respectively.  The CSUSB offense is led by reigning Wilson/CCAA Men's Soccer Player of the Week Obi Agwu, who has four so far this season.  The Coyotes are led by seventh year head coach Noah Kooiman. …Cal Poly Pomona (2-0-0, 0-0-0 CCAA) earned a pair of shutouts last week with a 3-0 win over Notre Dame de Namur and a 5-0 trouncing of Dominican.  With two goals each Luis Gonzales and Anthony Salcedo lead the Broncos attack.  Gonzales has added an assist to lead the scoring with five points. Four keepers have seen time in net for CPP each playing 45 minutes.  Lance Thompson, in his second season, leads the Broncos.  His CPP record is 12-8-1.
