ARCATA- The Humboldt State women's basketball team is hoping for redemption in another set of back-to-back home games this week at Lumberjack Arena. The Jacks will look to stop the undefeated Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday night and San Francisco State on Saturday. Humboldt struggled in last week's games, dropping two in California Collegiate Athletic Association conference play, after coming off five straight wins.
Head-to-Head
Humboldt leads the all-time series against CSU Monterey Bay, 9-2. The Jacks split the series with the Otters last season. San Francisco State leads the all-time series over the Jacks, 25-31. Both teams also split last years match-ups.
Lumberjack Notes
Humboldt may have hit a few bumps in this past week's losses, but HSU head coach Joddie Gleason is looking at the big picture to get her team back to the .500 mark. “We took a look at film and saw a couple of glaring weaknesses of things that we need to work on,” said Gleason. “We are struggling with rebounding and the other is unforced errors…and those are controlled things,” she added. Gleason is pleased with the defensive improvements in which her team continues to improve on. “Our defense is coming together. We are defending their action better,” Gleason explained. “Our post is able to help and still recover which says a lot about the growth of Jeanette (DeWitt). She had her best defensive game against (Cal Poly) Pomona,” she added. Offensively, the Jacks will look to crack the Otters' defense. “We are focusing on taking care of the ball and getting good shots off,” said the coach. “We are playing two good defensive teams this week. They don't let you be undisciplined and will force us to run our stuff,” Gleason concluded.
Opponent's Notes
CSU Monterey Bay holds a perfect 12-0 (8-0, CCAA) record entering Thursday's game. Despite their untouched season, the Otters do not have a single player averaging in double-digits. Erika Ward leads the team with 8.7 points per game. The Otters are holding their competition to under 50 points while they are averaging 16.2 more points than their match-ups. San Francisco State holds a 1-11 (1-7, CCAA) before they face Sonoma State on Thursday night and then travel to Humboldt for Saturday's game. Dominique Hunter leads the Gators, averaging 10.0 points while also pulling down 11.5 rebounds per game
Coach Joddie Gleason
Joddie Gleason enters her seventh season at the helm of the Humboldt State's women's basketball program, after leading the 2009-10 squad to a 20-11 overall record and 14-8 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Finishing in a tie for fourth place in the conference, the Jacks went on a three-game tear and won the CCAA Tournament and earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. It was the team's third NCAA Division II West Regional birth in the last five years and just the fourth in school history. Under Gleason, the Lumberjacks have won more games in the past five years than in any other six-year period and her .657 winning percentage is by far the best in school history. In her six years at HSU, Gleason has amassed a 111-73 overall mark and is 77-50 in league contests (56-35 in the CCAA and 21-15 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference).
Jack Tracks: Lisa Petty Player Thoughts
Class: Sophomore
Hometown: Castro Valley, Calif.
High School: Castro Valley HS
After a 5-0 winning run, Lisa Petty and the Jacks returned to Lumberjack Arena and found something they were not looking for…back-to-back losses. “We struggled with our offensive flow,” said Petty. “We settled for tough shots and on top on that we were giving the teams easy points. If you add those together it creates a loss,” she added. “On the road we got back on track with some wins,” said the sophomore. “When we came home we played two ranked teams so it was a big test for us. Now we are focused on what we need to do and what needs to be fixed,” she added. “It is all a learning process,” said Petty. “Not only is every game tough but every possession is important and sometimes we are giving countless possessions away. The Jacks will face the undefeated Otters on Thursday night and Petty recognizes the challenge that awaits her and her teammates. “It's going to be tough to stop five players instead of just one dominant player,” explained Petty in regards to CSU Monterey Bay's depth. “We just had a tough streak and we would have loved to have gotten those wins…but we are ready for a battle against an undefeated team.

Gleason's Comments
“We are focused on rebounding…Pomona got too many “O” boards so we need to omit those for this week.” … “(CSU) Monterey Bay plays as a unit instead of having a standout. They have a lot of returning players and that helps in knowing their player personnel. They are a very balanced and confident team. They shoot the ball well and they don't make a lot of mistakes. (Michelle) Santizo is a good player and runs the show. She may not have great stats but she can still show up and have a big game.”…”Both teams this week are good defensive teams so we will continually work to get good shots at each position.”…”In the past, (CSU) Monterey Bay use to push the ball…make or miss. Now, they have a different philosophy and they run the shot clock to get good shots and will force us to take tough ones.”
