Jacks score dramatic goal in last seconds for win

Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – Everyone thought the game between Humboldt State and Cal State San Bernardino would go into overtime, but Michael Powell made sure it wouldn't. With just four seconds left on the clock, Powell scored for the Jacks in a dramatic 1-0 win Sunday afternoon.

The win improves the Humboldt State record to 4-11 overall, 4-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Coyotes drop to 5-9-2 overall, 3-9-2 in conference action.

"I wanted them to win because we deserved to win Friday," said head coach C.J. Johnson. "We were due for something positive."

After being outshot 5-1 in the first half—that shot not coming until the 44th minute from Jordan Zogg—Johnson was pleased his team kept the Coyotes scoreless heading into halftime.

"We did not play well in the first half," said Johnson. "We didn't take care of the ball so at halftime I was really happy we were still tied. We just looked like an already beaten team in the first half."

The heat may have had something to do with the level of play in the first half, but the Jacks were able to overcome it in the second half.

"We were a completely different team in the second half," said Johnson. "We were in their half for most of the action."

Humboldt State fired off three shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half by three different players: Zach Hammond, Ray Lind and Bruno da Matta. The Jacks turned the momentum around in their favor, outshooting the Coyotes 7-2.

Kyle Verle made a crucial tip save to keep his third shut out of the season, but it was Powell who was the difference maker, coming out of nowhere to put the ball in the back of the net in the 90th minute.

"I thought we deserved to get a goal in that half with how well we were playing," said Johnson. "Zach said, 'That's how you start a second half,' to which I added, 'And that's how you finish it.'"

The Jacks definitely finished the game in style as they return home to host the last three games of the season. HSU takes on Dominican Tuesday at 2 p.m. before facing Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus.
