ROHNERT PARK – Fireworks may not have gone off on the west coast yet, but Humboldt State found an offensive spark in its last game of 2011. The Jacks took an early lead against Sonoma State and although the Seawolves threatened, HSU never let go of its double-digit lead, beating the Seawolves 55-44 Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Jacks extend their streak to five games, putting them at 9-1 overall, 5-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action. Sonoma State drops to 4-6 overall, 2-4 in conference.
Humboldt State, led by
Kayla Williams's 15 points, took control of the game in the first half, never allowing Sonoma State to grab any momentum. The Jacks went on a 11-point run in six minutes to extend their lead to 22 points and keept the Seawolves to just seven points in the last eight minutes of the first half.
"I thought we did a good job in beginning to grab an early lead," said Williams, who also had four assists and four steals. "We could have done a better job keeping the lead but we pulled it out."
The Jacks capitalized off turnovers from Sonoma State, scoring 27 points off turnovers. Along with Williams,
Caitie Richards and
Whitney Howard also scored in the double-figures, with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Lisa Petty and
Bree Halsey's combined effort at the post for HSU helped grab 16 of the Jacks' 35 collective rebounds off the boards.
Alyssa Ito and Jaclyn Bisordi scored in double figures for SSU—with 10 and 11 points, respecitvely—but the Seawolves could not break the double-digit point lead established by the Jacks in the first ten minutes of the game. Aly Conway dominated the boards, collecting 11 rebounds for SSU.
HSU struggled from the line, shooting 5-for-13 for 39-percent, but the Jacks still hung onto the lead to make sure they had something besides a new year to celebrate.
"It feels good," said Williams. "We wanted to end the year right."
