HSU drops another heartbreaker at CSUSB

SAN BERNARDINO — Two critical calls in the waning seconds of the game cost Humboldt State a heart-breaking women's basketball defeat, 86-84 at Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.

The loss drops Humboldt State to 12-10 overall and 9-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State San Bernardino improved to 17-4 overall and 13-4 in league games.

After the Jacks' Kayla Williams drove for a game-tying layup with 24 seconds remaining, the Coyotes worked the clock down to four seconds before Eisha Sheppard drove down the lane. Sheppard missed her shot, but a foul was called, and she gave her team the two-point lead.

Humboldt State had a chance to tie or win when Williams took the inbound pass at halfcourt with two second remaining and drove withing 3-point range. But a whistle negated the effort, calling her for an over-and-back violation that turned the ball over and sealed the CSUSB win.

Williams put forth a superlative effort for HSU, scoring a career-best 31 points. She was 4-for-9 from beyond 3-point range and 10-of-21 from the field.

Sophomore Lisa Petty achieved a double-double for HSU, scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Bree Halsey did likewise, with 15 points an 14 rebounds in a losing effort.

Amber Glasser led CSUSB with 26 points, and Sheppard scored all 21 of her points in the second half after being held down by the Jacks in the opening period. Danielle Shows added 13 points and a team-best nine rebounds.

Humboldt State takes another roadtrip next weekend, traveling to face San Francisco State on Friday and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.
