ARCATA - A Bree Halsey put-back with two seconds on the clock edged the Jacks past San Francisco State in an aggressive fight on the road, 66-65.
“This was huge for us,” said HSU head coach Joddie Gleason. “It is great to get one after playing like that down the stretch,” she added.
The Jacks improve to 13-10 (10-9,CCAA) with the victory while the Gators slide to 4-19 (4-15, CCAA) after the loss.
Humboldt State had a 29-38 lead at halftime. The Jacks dominated from the floor, shooting 15-32 from the field and 50 (3-6) percent from beyond the arc. The Gators struggled, shooting just 23.3 percent and were 1-7 from three-point range. SF State shot three times as many free throws as the Jacks and earned 13 of their points on second chance points while Humboldt earned just five.
The Gators came out strong in the second half with an improved shooting percentage (30.3) and began the second period on a 10-3 run before taking a five point lead with just over seven minutes to play. The Jacks and Gators continued to flip-flop the possession of the lead. The Jacks, who were down by one with 11 seconds to play, witnessed a Jenna Hamiliton miss which allowed Halsey to rebound and put it back in with only two seconds to play.
“Bree is her own worst enemy,” said Gleason. “It is great that she was able to knock one down at the end when it counted,” she added.
Humboldt was led by Lisa Petty who added a double-double to her resume, 21 points and 10 rebounds. Kayla Williams continues to shine offensively with 17 points.
All five starters from SF State scored in double digits. Erica Greer, Nicole Hicks and Michaela Booker each added 13 while Sherika Miller contributed 12 and Dominique Hunter added 11.
The Jacks will travel to Seaside and play Cal State Monterey Bay tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m.
