Jacks drop game two on the road

SEASIDE - The Humboldt State women's basketball team seemed to be holding their own against the number two-ranked California Collegiate Athletic Association team, Cal State Monterey Bay, before taking the court for the second half.  The Jacks fell to the Otters in the biggest loss of the season, 75-54, after leading by one at halftime.

The Jacks, who have already clinched a CCAA tournament berth, fall to 13-11 (10-10, CCAA) while the Otters improve their near perfect season of 22-2 (18-2, CCAA).

Despite Humboldt's one point lead at the half, the Jacks trailed CSUMB the entire game in shooting percentage.  The Otters shot an impressive 51.9 percent the second half while the Jacks were limited to just 31.3 percent.

“They started hitting key shots and got confident,” said HSU head coach Joddie Gleason.  “It showed why they are a nationally ranked team,” she added.

Cal State Monterey Bay out-rebounded the Jacks 39-28 but Humboldt was able to limit their turnovers to just 14 for the game, two better than their opponent.

The Otters held all of the Humboldt players to single-digit scoring with the team high being eight points by Bree Halsey and Lisa Petty. Halsey also had 11 rebounds.

London Houchin who added 15 points and Holly Holcomb led CSUMB with 13 rebounds.

“Holcomb played a great game,” said Gleason.  “It was hard to slow her down,” she added.

The Jacks will return to Lumberjack Arena for the last week of regular season action.  Humboldt will first take on Cal State Dominguez Hills on Wednesday night and Cal State Los Angeles on Friday.  Both games are at 5:30 p.m.

“Every game in conference is tough,” commented Gleason. “(Cal State) LA and (CSU) Dominguez Hills are both trying to get in tournament so it will be a battle.  We will be fired up for our last games at home and will be playing for our senior Taylor Kilgore,” she concluded.
