ARCATA - It was a game controlled by Humboldt. A game that held Cal State Stanislaus' California Collegiate Athletic Association player of the week scoreless the first half and a game that the Lumberjacks led for more than 38 minutes.
Humboldt State defeated the visiting Warriors for the first time this season at Lumberjack Arena, 85-80. The Jacks advance to 11-8 (8-7, CCAA) while the Warriors fall 10-9 (8-7, CCAA).
“We did a nice job of being solid, strong, and hitting free throws down the stretch when they were needed,” said HSU head coach Joddie Gleason.
The Jacks, who led the Warriors by nine entering the half-time, were 15-29 (51.7 percent) from the field in the first-half, which dominated the Cal State Stanislaus offense by nearly 17 percent. They finished the game shooting just over 43 percent.
Humboldt's defense held CCAA all-star Katie Busi to 13 points, in which all of them were earned in the second half in the Warriors late-game rally.
“Elle (Anderson), Jeanette (DeWitt) and Whitney (Howard) did a good job of making her earn her points,” said Gleason in regards to Busi.
Humboldt led by as many as 14 in the second half but the determined Warrior offense chipped away to get within four with just 33 seconds in the game. The Jacks held their lead with clutch free throws until the final buzzer.
Lisa Petty led the Jacks with 24 points and was just one rebound shy of a double- double. Kayla Williams added 11 along with DeWitt with 10.
The Warriors' high scorer was Andreanna Marshall with 21.
Humboldt will return to action at Lumberjack Arena on Saturday night against long-time rival Chico State.
“The HSU and Chico rival dates back to the days with the big football rival,” said Gleason. “Chico no longer has football but it is still big for the other sports. It is fun and tough match-up…we are excited to play,” she concluded.
