ARCATA - In a sea of pink at Lumberjack Arena, the Jacks had only one thing on their mind. Humboldt defeated rival Chico State on Pink Zone/Breast Cancer Awareness night, 76-60. The Jacks, who have won 11 of their last 15 games, advance to 12-8 (9-7, CCAA) while the Wildcats fall to 14-6 (11-5, CCAA).
“We always get up for the game against Chico,” said HSU head coach Joddie Gleason. “With it being pink zone night it is easy to get too amped. We talked about composure and trying not to let the excitement get to us too much…I think we did a nice job of doing that,” she added.
Humboldt, who took an early 4-0 lead, knew it was not going to be that easy. The Wildcats challenged the host and outshot the Jacks in the first half, 64.5 percent to 34. Humboldt entered the locker room at half trailing the Wildcats, 37-33.
Kristin Marquardt put up 13 for Chico but was held scoreless in the second half.
The Wildcats expanded their lead to eight in the early minutes of the second half before Humboldt's dominating 18-7 run with just over 10 minutes to play. Lisa Petty's back-to-back threes, two-sets of good free throws by Kayla Williams and a Caitie Richards' three were included in the offensive surge by the Jacks.
Humboldt held the Wildcats to just ten points for the remainder of the game and extended their final lead to 16.
Williams led the Lumberjacks with 22 with Petty close behind adding 20.
The Jacks will pack their bags and travel for the next two weeks. Humboldt's first stop is Cal Poly Pomona on Friday night and Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.
