Stalf leads Jacks to double victories

MCKINLEYVILLE - Sophomore standout Chrissy Stalf left a mark in the minds of University of Hawai'i Hilo on Tuesday afternoon.  Stalf belted three home runs in the doubleheader duel which included a two-run homer in game one and a solo and grand-slam in game two.  Both bombs in game two came in the sixth inning.

The Jacks beat both the weather and the visiting Vulcans, 9-1 and 9-4.  Humboldt advances to 13-11 (6-9, CCAA) while the Vulcans fall to 10-5 (5-1, PacWest).

Humboldt State - 9    Univ. of Hawai'i Hilo - 1 (5 innings)

The Lumberjacks recorded runs in all but the third inning to start the two-game match up.  Geneva Perrine came out swinging in game one with back-to-back doubles in the first and second innings.

Humboldt, who took a solid 6-0 lead after the fourth, was hopeful of the mercy (eight-run) rule.  But the Jacks gave one up in the top of the fifth which would force them to score three runs to end the game.

The determined Lumberjacks answered with a Ally Blenis solo home run to start off the fifth.  Serena Aragones singled to right field and continued to advance to second and third on passed balls.  Lindsey Warren, who was walked and proceeded to steal second, scored on an Alicia Reid two-RBI single to left field, which also scored Aragones.

Vaneza Hoover (5-3) earned the win for the Lumberjacks.  Hoover allowed just four hits and one run in the five inning contest.

Humboldt State - 9    Univ. of Hawai'i Hilo - 4

The Lumberjacks put up a fight to conquer the Vulcans in game two.

The visiting squad combined for nine hits and four runs in the first six innings with the Jacks totaling just three hits and one run.

But then the Jacks were sparked.

Stalf stepped up to start the sixth inning for the Jacks and belted a solo home run.  Stalf was supported by Felicia Viveiros who doubled to right field.  Blenis was placed on first after being walked and advanced to second on a Courtney Hiatt single to center..  With the bases loaded, Aragones reached on a fielder's choice and Viveiros scored on an error by the catcher, who dropped the ball at the plate.  With no outs and the bases still loaded, Sarah Fox's single to left field scored Blenis and advanced all the runners.  Kirsten Nouzovsky's sacrifice fly out scored Hiatt.

The Jacks led by one run with two outs...and Stalf returned to the plate.

A grand-slam would only be fitting for the 6-1 sophomore who totaled five RBIs in the sixth inning, alone.  Stalf combined for five hits, seven RBIs, and three runs on the day.

The Jacks retired the Vulcans with no runs and no hits in the seventh to end the game.

Jessica George (4-5) picked up the win for the Jacks.  George allowed five hits and just one run after replacing Hoover after the third inning.
