HSU splits with UCSD

LA JOLLA - Humboldt State softball seems to be developing a trend.  The Lumberjacks split, yet another, in California Collegiate Athletic Asssociation conference play, this time with UC San Diego.  The Jacks fell short of the Tritons, 6-2, before a game two victory of 9-4.

The Jacks, who now stand 10-7 (5-5, CCAA) are in sixth place of the CCAA standings while UC San Diego holds spot two with a 17-3 (11-2, CCAA) record.

UC San Diego - 6    Humboldt State - 2

Sophomore standout, Chrissy Stalf, started off game one in the one spot and hammered a homer down the right field line.  Stalf was 3-3 in game one with a homerun, double and single.

The Jacks added to their early lead with another run in the second but were held scoreless for the remainder of the game by UC San Diego's ace pitcher, Camille Gaito (10-0).

The Tritons, who answered the Jacks early offensive surge, added two runs in  the second, a three-run homer in the fifth, and a closing run in the sixth to claim the victory.

Vaneza Hoover (4-2) earned the loss for the Jacks.  Hoover gave up eight hits and six runs in 6.0 innings.

Humboldt State - 9    UC San Diego - 4

The Humboldt bats got hot in game two.  The Jacks connected with 12 hits, allowing the Tritons just six.

Jessica George pitched a complete game for the Jacks in their victory over UC San Diego in game two, 9-4.

George (3-2) faced 35 batters in her 7.0 inning outing, striking out just one.  George gave up six hits and seven walks in her third win of the season.

Nikki Ketteringham roped in two runs and went 3-5 in the win.  Ketteringham was supported by Kirsten Nouzovsky (2-4), Stalf (1-3), Felicia Vivieros (2-3), Ally Blenis (2-3), and Alicia Reid (1-2).

Ketteringham began the game with a single up the middle and was followed by a Nouzovsky double.  Stalf added to her game one performance with another double down the right field line, scoring Ketteringham and Nouzovsky.  The Jacks added two more runs in the first and continued to score three in the second inning.

The Tritons were not going to give up that easy.  The host put up three in the second and one in the third to force the Jacks to keep working.

The Jacks kept the edge with a two runs in the fourth.  Both teams would remain scoreless the remainder of the game.

The Jacks and Tritons will conclude the four-game series on Saturday with the final double header beginning at 11 a.m.
