ARCATA - After the game was suspended on Monday night due to darkness, the Jacks rallied back on Tuesday morning to defeat Cal State Monterey Bay in a nine-inning hitters duel, 15-14. Humboldt then dropped games three and four to the Otters after allowing 25 hits, combined, in Tuesday's double header.
"We are a .500 club," said HSU head coach Frank Cheek. "We mirror this team (CSUMB). We both can hit, play descent defense and lack in the circle...its that simple," he added.
The Jacks and Otters fought tooth and nail to outscore one another in game two. The Jacks led CSUMB, 12-8, before the game was called on Monday night due to darkness.
But a Jackie Serna grand-slam in the seventh would tie things up and force extra play. Both teams scored a single run in the eighth and CSUMB added one in the ninth to take the lead.
Humboldt, who was forced to score, put up two in the bottom of the ninth to claim the victory. With Sarah Fox and Lindsey Warren on,
Alicia Reid's ground out to the pitcher each advanced them one base. With two outs, Geneva Perrine's double to right field scored both Andrea Chavez (pinch runner) and Warren.
The Jacks momentum could not seem to carry them through to games three and four.
CSUMB tallied nine hits in game three and 16 in game four to split the series with the host Jacks. Humboldt hit just 13 combined hits to the Otters 25.
With the game three tied, 3-3, the Otters shined in the seventh inning for the win. CSUMB put up five runs on four hits and scored on HSU's wild pitches.
But the Otter beating did not stop there. Their hot bats continued in the final game where they outscored the Jacks, 13-5.
The Jacks were led by Felicia Viveiros (.403 BA) and
Chrissy Stalf (.401 BA). Stalf added three home runs in the series against CSUMB to bring her single-season total to 14. Stalf is just one home run shy of tying the all-time single season record held by Taiisha Pleasant, which was set in 1999.
The Jacks will travel this weekend to San Francisco to face SF State beginning on Friday at 1 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m.
