ARCATA - She stands as tall as the Redwood trees that line the Humboldt State outfield. The 6-0 sophomore not only has the stature of a record holder but the power and numbers to back it up.
Chrissy Stalf entered the day one bomb shy of the single-season home run record and she stood tall, like always, in her first at-bat. The Humboldt supporters awaited what the Lumberjack standout was about to produce, a high-rising belt over the right field fence. Stalf sprinted the bases, as if it was her first one of the season, but this time when she crossed home plate she owned the name atop the record book. Stalf added another homer in game two to give her a running total of 17 for the 2011 season.
The Jacks proved in Thursday's match-ups why they continue to be a force to never be forgotten within the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Humboldt remains in seventh place with a record of 26-22 (14-16, CCAA) but with two games still remaining in regular season, the fourth spot, held by Cal State Dominguez Hills, is within reach.
The Jacks defeated the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino, 5-0 and 6-4, in games one and two of the four-game series.
Vaneza Hoover held composure in game one of the day and earned the win in the circle for the Jacks. Hoover produced her first shutout of the 2011 season, allowing just three hits and six walks. The sophomore struck out three.
Stalf was supported by her fellow home run companion, Felicia Viveiros. Viveiros added another homer to her resume in game one, just two batters after Stalf in the first inning and in game two to secure the lead.
Humboldt continued to shine with the bat. The Jacks put up seven hits in the first showing and 12 in the second to overcome the visiting Coyotes. HSU never trailed in either game and were led offensively by Stalf (4-5), Geneva Perrine (4-8), Viveiros (2-7) both hits being home runs, and Courtney Hiatt (4-7) with a home run in game one.
Jessica George earned the win in game two. The freshman allowed six hits and four runs in her 7.0 complete innings in the circle.
The Jacks will face Cal State San Bernardino for day two of the four-game series. The Jacks will begin play at 1 p.m. at the HSU Field with a ceremony to honor the graduating seniors (Geneva Perrine, Kristina Lewis, Lindsay Warren, and Nikki Ketteringham) prior to the first pitch.
