ARCATA -
Kirsten Nouzovsky, who combined for 5-7 on the day, lifted the Lumberjacks to a sweep over Academy of Art on Wednesday morning. The Jacks rallied from behind in both games to overcome the Urban Knights at the HSU Field in a non-conference doubleheader. Humboldt has not played a true home game since May 9, 2009 when they hosted the West Region Tournament.
"They (Academy of Art) are a good ball club," said HSU head coach Frank Cheek. "The girls played hard and beat a team that has a good record," he added.
Humboldt State - 7 Academy of Art - 6
Humboldt fell behind early in game one with a lead-off home run by Alana Aweau in the first. HSU then allowed two runs in the third off of just one hit and three walked batters.
Serena Aragones' double to center field started things off for the trailing Jacks in the bottom of the third. With one out and two on base, Nouzovsky belted one over the fence for the tie. Nouzovsky was followed by hits from Courtney Hiatt and
Alicia Reid. Reid's single scored Ally Blenis who had reached due to an Academy of Art error.
The Jacks added a run in the fourth before being challenged by the Urban Knights. The Knights pulled ahead of the host by adding runs in the sixth and seventh, forcing Humboldt to score.
And score they did.
A Felicia Viveiros single up the middle was only the beginning of the Lumberjack rally. Tonya Walker replaced Viveiros on first as the pinch runner and stole second on an Urban Knight wild pitch. Walker advanced to third on a Nouzovsky single through the left side. Hiatt reached on a fielder's choice, which also scored Walker and placed Nouzovsky on third. With Reid up to bat, Nouzovsky crossed home for the winning run on another Academy of Art wild pitch.
Kristina Lewis picked up the win for the Jacks. Lewis allowed four hits and two runs in 3.0 innings after replacing Vaneza Hoover.
Humboldt State - 6 Academy of Art - 5
Academy of Art came out strong again in game two. The Knights put up five runs on just two hits and faced three Humboldt pitchers in just the first inning of play.
Jennifer Sizemore started the game for Humboldt and allowed two runs on no hits before being replaced by Lewis. Lewis faced two batters, allowing a walk and a double, and was traded out for Jessica George.
Trailing by five, the Jacks answered back in the bottom of the first. A series of singles from Geneva Perrine,
Chrissy Stalf, Nouzovsky, Hiatt, and Blenis combined for two runs in the Jacks favor.
Humboldt, who held the visitors to no runs the next inning, rallied for the tie in the second. Aragones reached on a error and advanced to second on Perrine's sacrifice bunt. A Stalf single advanced Aragones who then scored on Viveiros's ground out. Another Nouzovsky double and Hiatt single combined for the four hits and three runs for the Jacks.
Nouzovsky came up big for the Jacks again in the fourth with a solo home run, putting the Jacks in control.
Humboldt held the Knights scoreless for the remainder of the game.
George (5-7) earned the win for the Jacks allowing just four hits and one run while in the circle.
The Jacks advance to 18-15 (6-10, CCAA) and will look to carry the winning momentum into a conference match-up at Chico State on Friday and Saturday.
